Hi all,

I thought it'd be interesting to see what the primary reasons are for people who bought (or intend to buy) their red- how's everyone intending to use it? Personal use or part of a studio/production house? Freelance DOP work? Rental business? Private hobby? A money making investment or a personal means for creative expression? Let's hear 'em!

That's a great question, very interested in reading the answers. Here`s our two cents:

We will use RED in two arenas:

RED will most likely replace HD CAM and HD CAM SR in all of our documentary and commercial work.

We also produce films and media for the projection design for live performances: musical theatre, opera and large scale live events. As most projection sizes normally exceed 2K and 4K/8K (even 12K) are becoming regulars, the native acqusition format plays a huge role. Blowing SD footage up to a 20 meter 4K projection looks like... well you know. In the past we have been using tools like a Canon Mark II to acquire native high res images. Great visually, but alsways still. This is all about to change :shifty:

Apart from that we are convinced, that the camera will allow us to explore areas, that we have not even thought about yet. When you have a tool that is finally able to match the expectations of your imagination (and not break the bank while doing it), many many things are possible.

I listen to the chat among professionals in the film industry. I do not sense any interest among them to use RED.
They might show interest in digital filming, if Sony/Panasonic come up with a good digital camera.
Most of the fans of RED seems to be non-professionals.
Many have ordered and then refused to take delivery.
Many have taken delivery and then tried to sell them on e-bay and other places without success.
I have not seen a lot of use among producers of independent films, commericials or music videos.
This is not to knock on RED. RED is a great camera. If the work flow was easy to use, it would have become very popular.

Did a poll few weeks ago where i ask the same question as you:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9756

Only 41 persons andswer, so its might not be very accurate, but it give a good idea.

Etienne, thanks for that. Very interesting results.

But if I understood the question correctly, it's more: what kinda applications is the camera being used for? As we will be using it for lots of different things, it would be interesting to hear what people out there are making the camera do...

Chuckt, with all due respect dude, SHUT THE F#%*k UP!
Try to use the non-moronic side of your brain or go find something better to do.

I apologize to other Reduser members for my language, but that felt good:calm:

Exactly!

Strange. It's pretty much all we are talking about here in Toronto. Not that we spend our whole time on set or in the prep lanes talking about gear, but when we do Red is inevitably part of that discussion.

Chuckt, I would be very interested to find out what market you are working in that has not heard of the Red? I dare you to PM me your resume so we can talk about all of your professional experience.

I shoot stock, I do a few other things from time to time, but mostly I make moving pictures for other people to use in their projects.

pilot projects for tv, a feature thriller. All our ad work, vfx plate shots, short films, promo bumper work...... Anything that needs to look sexy :)

We are professionals so this camera is huge for us.

what the f is wrong with chuck? Does he live under a dirty rock or is he working for Sony?

I second that, but let's try not make every thread that CHUCKT writes into a consequent CHUCKT thread. You pay him too much honor by doing that (YES I KNOW IT IS HARD TO IGNORE)

:meh:

we have a dance feature (PG13) scheduled for august (casting now). The followup will be a R rated adult comedy (writing that one now). Features primarily. We have a res but we may not buy depending on the rental market for Reds in our timeframe.

Edit: We looked to purchase because rentals were around 2k/day around the time we ordered. However now it looks that we can probably get an 8k package for 3-4 weeks. It really depends on the LA rental market on what we'll actually buy. I gotta be honest the tech geek in me is really eager for a new RED toy - but since we're not interested in becoming a rental company our purchase is contingent on rental rates out here.

My name is Chuckt and I think the Red One is useless, which is why I've got 95 posts on this site - I love wasting my own time.

My name is ChuckT and I don't have any numbers which is why I say "many" and "most" instead of giving actual figures which I don't have and have no way of knowing.

Hey chuckt, have you heard? Stephen Sommers has joined the fray. He's chosen RED for GI JOE (2009). But then again maybe you have him categorized as a "fanboy non-professional" (like Soderbergh?). Regarding that ebay comment: the last auction netted the seller almost 12k profit (just so you know)

Peace out.

no dude you're right on the money. I'm TOTALLY for free speech and all, but this is ridiculous. This guy is clearly here to cause shit on behalf of someone. Unbelievable nonsense, hyperbole, and mis-information every single post. Seriously Jared, that he's still here is a joke.

EDIT: i see that others agree. i just read jaadgy's post and replied....

I don't want much

I don't want much

In the short term I will be using the Red to shoot music videos, promotions for the local NBC station, and my commercial work. This is all stuff that I shoot with my HVX-200. I am just upping the quality of my work to get more and better projects with a better demo.

I shoot HD stock. Now I will have my own gear to do that with 35mm glass.

I have done a couple of indi films as DP. I want to do more of that. With the Red, my stedicams, and my lighting/grip/audio equipment I can offer a good deal to a producer/director. The tax credits here will help with that as well.

I also want to be able to use my Red for live production using the B4 mount and an EFP style lens. I do a lot of work for CNN. If I had a HDSDI out and an evf I could shoot HD in live situations for them. The truck that they have here has one HD signal path.

I want the Red to be a high end HD camera that will do whatever my clients want while looking better than anything else around at least here in New Orleans.

Chuckt - ask yourself how long after GV viper was created before the first feature was shot with that camera? I remember when it was big news because thomson sold 1, yes ONE camera in Japan (around 2005). Regarding adoption of a new technology...RED is moving at hyper-speed. Already we have a handful of studio backed films committing to RED and more (unnoticed) independent pictures (inevitably some will be good enough to gain notoriety)

I'm done.

My Red will basically replace my Mini35/HVX200 setup. I will be using my Red camera to shoot documentaries and other projects for my clients in Nigeria. In L.A. and Atlanta I will use it to shoot music videos, commercials and features and shorts.
