Hi

I live in France, and I've ordered my Red One two days ago. An American friend of mine regulary goes to California to see his family, so he can bring it back without duty fees.

Right now, the dollar is so low i could buy a Red and save about 7 000€.

My question is :

Is it possible for the Red Team to accept more than the usual 10% deposit ?

I mean, I can pay about 7000$ for the first deposit, and what's left in a few weeks...

It should be ok, i guess, better give more than less money.... but i want to be sure.

Before you consider bringing your RED back "dutyfree" you should consider the fact that sending the camera back for service and/or maintenance is no longer an option. Also - travelling with your RED will be very cumbersome and you'll risk getting taxed and fined if you get caught.

Just a heads up from someone who thought about bringing it home the same way.

Quote from the bomb squad at RED:

"Additional prepayments can be made at anytime via wire transfer, check drawn from a US bank, or cash."

Just give them a call.

Also, if your friend picks it up in California, you will get hit with California State tax (8.25% or something.) They would have to ship it out of state to avoid it. I'm sure there are refund schemes but what a pain!

So they would just walk it back in the country like it was a handy-cam? I'd think they would get stopped at customs...

Not exactly a "happy-snap" kind of camera.

If you buy a Red and bring it back without checking it at customs you'll never be able to send it for repair (if it ever needs some) or make an ATA form for somebody to travel international with it.
Just keep that in mind...

I recieved my Red in ireland - no duty, just VAT. The duty, even if I was charged is not such a lot of money to avoid future hassle. It doesn't cost anything to register for VAT.

Sorry guys but this makes no sense at all.

I'm from Italy but currently in the US (I'm a US Citizen as well as Italian citizen) obviously been that I'm here I'll take delivery of the cameras here, and when I'll go to Italy, I can ship anything I want back and fourth, as well as I have been doing with my Photography gear from Canon, all purchased here in the US.

When all the gear travels with me, is my gear and it is already used as the packages don't come with it, everything is fitted in transport cases.

There is nothing to declare as it is your used property, and there have never been any issues of any kind so far.

Ciao
