  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OK Realllllly Frustrated

Render time for TIF 16 bit from 4K 2:1 is about 1 second per frame.

Have you been able to render to anything other than Tiff or DPX? I get crashes whenever I try Quicktime.

I'm probably going to buy a Mac... but even then I've been testing on a friend's mac and that's had weird crashes and bugs.

Yup, I render out QuickTimes from RedCine without any problem (I was getting the freeze frame on larger renders). I haven't tested my new hardware with QuickTime yet to see if the freeze frame issue has gone away. Seems it might have gone away with the TIF renders (due to motherboard and CPU upgrade?).

I have also rendered long QT files with no issues whatsoever.

Honestly RECINE is currently unacceptable in the state that it is. There is no reason for this piece of software to be so unstable. I certainly hope that 3rd party companies will be able to provide solutions real soon for the PC. Workflow is the main reason we have not done any major long form projects with our 2 RED cameras. We love shooting with the REDs but we dread the post production to a point that for now we would rather shoot with another camera(s) for any serious project. What a shame....

1 sec!! for 16 bit TIF wooooow!

Could you put details high and sharpen at 100%
Color curve crash at low end and bit up at the top.

Also leave 4K IN and 4K OUT so TIF will be full 4K 4096x2304

The file size should be then 55.3MB

On my 2.8GHz dual core it takes 2 - 2.5 sec per frame.

Upgraded my motherboard and CPU yesterday (still using nVidia Quadro FX 3450). Just rendered 3,465 frames (2:24) at TIF 16 without any problem. No freeze frame. About 1 second per frame render time.

Sean,

What system spec are you running now, it seems you have this dialled?

Okay, just rendered out over 4 minutes of TIF 16 bit (from 4K 2:1), and it came out perfectly. No freeze frames.

Then rendered out over 4 minutes of QuickTime DNxHD (from 4K 2:1), and it also rendered out perfectly...until 2 minutes and 25 seconds. Then I got the freeze frame.

Seemingly a stable PC solution for RedCine, if I'm going to export TIF sequences, or under 2.5 minutes of QT per render.

Andrew, I just tried this now, with those RedCine specs you are using. It's a bit under 2 seconds per frame for a render. But file size is 49MB, I guess cuz I'm using 4K 2:1 rather than 4K full screen?

Thanks Sean, Yes I think this is about right for dual core.
I hope they will fix these REDCINE so we can finally get working on other then NVIDIA Quatro cards. Especially the new 8800 should be suported.

Is there currently a prefered mac and PC REDCINE SYSTEM posted anywhere?

David

I have seen the PC and MAC configs that works in REDCINE and system config group
PC config example you have above

I'm rendering 4K 2:1 at 0.65 seconds per frame to TIFF 16 bit (48 MB)! :)

This is also mainly a question of disk speed! I'm working with a really fast RAID but a not so fast GPU.

Dual Quad Core Mac Pro 3.2 GHz
MacOS 10.5.2 with graphics update
QuickTime 7.3
8 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600

[edit] Unfortunately, QuickTime export doesn't work at all. I only get a freeze frame of the beginning of the clip. :ranting2:

what RPM on your drives are you using 7400?

7200 rpm. But it's an 8 disk RAID, the new one by Dulce Systems. I get sustained write speeds of over 600 MB/s in a RAID 5 setup. :whistling:

We are zeroing in on a solution, have tried it on several machines and now think we may have one that works. Should finish testing tomorrow and will post if it really works.
I still think that we need someone in authority to give us some guidance, after all what good is a nifty camera if we can't get the images out of it? :detective2:
