Please excuse this post if it seems off-topic, I wasn't sure where else to post.

My name is Steve Hullfish. I am an author and more well known as a "post" guy. I have written two books on color correction and the first book is currently in production for its revised edition.

I am looking for rights to include footage as examples to color correct in the book. I only need very short pieces of shots. Maybe a 24 or 30 frames.

The footage can either be "perfect" (in which case, I might give it a "look") or it can be in need of some color correction tweaking, like tonal range improvement or color cast removal.

If you are interested in having your footage featured in the book, please contact me at steve@veralith.com. The first book sold very well (the second one is only just out) and is on many desks around the world.

P.S. I pulled the RED NOOMA footage that was recently posted and color corrected it, giving it a nice mixed light feel and beefing up the contrast a bit.

Thanks. The first one is about to get much better with the revised edition. Hopefully it can include some cool RED footage as well.

Hi Steve whats the name of your books?

I would like to check them out.

Thanks. The first one is about to get much better with the revised edition. Hopefully it can include some cool RED footage as well.

Recently purchased both of your books. Very nice books. If I knew you were coming up with a revised edition of the first one, I could have waited for it.

I've got your first one. What's the difference between the second and what you're working on now? What format do you want the footage in?

I want to be very careful not to make this seem like a commercial use of this forum. I apologize if by answering any of these questions I violate any rules of the forum.

The first book "Color Correction for Digital Video" was the first book written on color correction for video/film and it was aimed at getting non-linear editors like Avid and FCP and After Effects compositors up to speed on how to do color correction with the tools available to them in those apps.

The second book, "The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction" is very cool. I traveled around the country and sat in on more than 40 hours of color correction sessions with some of the best colorists in the industry. They all graded the same footage for me and the book walks you through the differences and similarities in their approaches to the material. These are guys who grade hit TV shows like "24," "Desperate Housewives," "48 Hours" and "L.A. Law." Also feature film DI colorists and spot and music video colorists. Also extensive interviews with legendary colorist, Bob Festa. All of the footage that they graded in those sessions is provided in the DVD that comes with the book. There are some chapters at the beginning of the book that provide a basic starting point for people starting to dabble in color correction, but more than half of the book is real world color correction advice and techniques from more than a dozen pro colorists.

If you are interested in providing footage, Hi-Def QT is best. Standard def QT is also good. I don't want to go to full 2K and 4K because that would mean fitting less footage and tutorials on the DVD. I only need maybe a second per shot.

Sorry. The second edition of the first book won't be out until maybe the end of the year or this time next year. The basic information will be the same. I will be updating with the latest information on new applications and adding new footage to the DVD. I also wanted to address some of the constructive criticism I've received about the book over the years since it's been published.

If you can provide any footage for the new edition that I end up using in the book, you'll get a free copy when it comes out, so there you go!

Once again, not to turn this into a giant advertisement, but to answer the question:

"Color Correction for Digital Video," by Steve Hullfish and Jaime Fowler, CMP Books (now Focal Press), 2002.
"The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction," by Steve Hullfish, Focal Press, 2008.

For those who are interested in color correction, I just did an impromptu 12 minute video podcast on using secondary color correction in Apple's Color.

If you are using Color to grade your RED footage, this may be of interest. Please note that it requires a username and password which are below. And if you don't have a real ftp application, the only browser that seems to be able to download the file is Firefox. I'm going to cross post this message to the Cinematography forum discussion as well.

The file can be downloaded from
ftp://01f8c14.netsolhost.com:21//Color Secondaries podcast.m4v

and requires a case-sensitive user name of user name: client%01f8c14 and password: Veral1th
