  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

pointing a lazer pointer into the lens

I don't think it will hurt the lens, but maybe the sensor. I mean, you wouldn't want to point a lazer pointer into your eye... I wouldn't try it.

There was a thread on this before... I don't recall if there was any good answer presented. I won't be shooting one into my camera. Oh and it's "laser", not "lazer" :bleh:

Hah. Yeah I know. that's one automatic default misspelling I've been struggling with since I was a kid. I still have no idea why I keep typing it that way.

Other people say "alot" and "teh", I say "lazer".

At least it comes up less often :)

The fact that you guys keep saying "laser" in quotation marks is giving me doctor evil flashbacks... :)

lazer is a way cooler way to spell laser.

lazer nukes.......heard Iran has some of those.......ha hahaha.....

Well, I would not point any sort of laser into a CMOS or CCD. I have been shooting in a disco years ago pointing the camera into the laser to catch some cool images. And cool they were. Unfortunately we discovered pixel damage on the CCD afterwards. Very forunately the camcorder (DVW 700 WS) was able to cover the damage after resetting blacks. So I would rather not give it a try.

What about an old fashioned Ray Gun?

Nah. . . You're just watching too much FOX News and believing everything you hear.

Iran only has a hamster on plutonium steroids running around in a wheel able to generate enough power to operate a few light bulbs.

Remember though, Iraq still has WMD like it always had. . . right?

As long you would use eye safe laser like that ones which are used on the remutecontrol for a beamer or so on, it will not hurt the sensor if you dont let it in one position longer tome The power is to less to produce chemical or physical effect.
But regarding to one cell of the sensor you may produce some electrical effect which will degenerate the cell when the senor is under power.
Unfortunatly a lot of laserpointer including the nice green ones produce high unsave output above 1 mW which def can demage the sensor. Same case in Disco. Normallly the laser there are in the W area. Only a simple missoperating in the deflecting system can cause sensor or eye demage. As more often as the sysgtem is old and safty controlls in the the system does not work propper.

big no-no? will it make any difference?

There's a pretty interesting flare effect you can get off this I've seen before, but I wasn't sure about how it might mess with the sensor...

R.
ultra weak lazrs - no problem. medium and stronger:

for CCDs: 100% dont do it.
it will damage the ccd if its strong enough.
you might not see it at once (some cameras, as sony hdcams have an internal matrix storage which lists dead pixels and interpolates the surrounding ones to hide the defective pixels), but you will grill cells.

I have successfully toasted several CCDs when i begun my career in the late 80teis/early 90ties - motion control and lazr (thats even slicker spelling) was to inspiring to not take the risk.

And yes, big barbed-sensor-q-time. interesting effects for the 80ties style videoFX however.

for CMOS:
-should- be the same, but i personally didnt fry any cmos yet, so its just technical speculation, not personal experience.

and the important question ruari - will there be lot of lazer rays in your akira? :D

p.s.
lazer ray threads are incomplete until someone writes: "pew! pew!".

Anyone remember Lazer Tag? ....I thought it was cool, but I was young and naive. Then I discovered paint ball.

Or as Bush would say it: "Lazular".

I think he would say lazier... like in "That Cheney has gotten lazier than Barney since he had that new Pace maker put in... Didn't even know you could implant a device for the body to make its oun Picante sauce..."

No sweat...our "commander in chief" says nukelar.

hhmmm...I can't say you're in good company but you could be a US president! (wait aren't you from the other side of the pond?) Oh well.

Cheerz
