Great stuff - breakout box looks a much better bet than the ET version - anyone know who we contact for sales @ SIM?

I'm diggin that the Breakout box is flat, not all roundy for no reason. There is a shortage of flat places on this camera to velcro stuff to. Aja looks like it would fit nicely there.

Can you exlain why? I just don't get the headphone jack hole in the middle of the box. ETs is smaller so you have direct access to the headphone jack.

You still have direct access to the headphone jack....it just has a hole (cylindrical tube if you will) milled out for access.

There seem to be 2 photo versions of the box. Witch one is being sold?

Don't really care about the headphone jack. Do very much care about the four screws holding the unit in, rather than it being clamped to the mini-BNC's with just one independent point of attachment as with the ET unit. Much more solid and protective of the camera's built-in connectors.

FWIW (which ain't much!), I thought the original SIM design (covering all of the HDMI etc ports) looked better, but I'm guessing this way they don't have to worry about routing all those connectors through as well...

And no, I'm not joking. Price is better too.

Thanks Crewpix, I'll PM JDB...

One big difference is there is no tension on our DIN connectors, and the box is held on by 4 bolts. We have built for our rental house several connectors for the F900H that allowed us to use 7 pin xlr for the analog HD signals, and it was held on by one bolt. It tended to wiggle loose over time. We now use minimum of 2 holes, and try for 4 holes.
Beat me to it by a fraction of a second John, but my point exactly!

The one currently being sold is the breakout box. It just converts from DIN connector to BNC.

The other box is in development, but carries a downconverter in it. This one is a ways off yet.

Pretty observant Nick......it is a problem with this camera.

Ah, interesting - figured it was just a re-design...

So... Two questions spring to mind:

1) Any idea on pricing (ball park figure fine, off forum and on the QT also fine, if you don't want it released) for the downconverter version?

2) Does the downconverter unit also pass-though the HDMI/USB/etc ports?

Cheers John, just about to PM you...

This was a concern I took to ET about their design 4 weeks ago... Stephen explained in detail how his BOB is a very tight fit into that space and is held pretty firm even without the screw...

I should have mine soonish and will report back..

its great to have 2 options!

The price is going to be high....and we do not expect sales to be high. However, as ARRINICK pointed out, the breakout box is flat to hold velcro and the aja for steadicam shots. We would recommend that for all wired shots you put the downconverter and transmitter at the DOP station.

2) Does the downconverter unit also pass-though the HDMI/USB/etc ports?

The USB will be on the top of the box, with a protective rain cover. The HDMI is a redundant connector on the camera. The HDSDI outputs are more in tune with the professional side of the industry. The headphone jack is on the bottom, along with the Genlock.

That, my friend, is very true!

Also, having just checked the ET unit is less than I thought it was (seem to remember a price of around $850 being bandied about in the past, but maybe my recollection is off?), although the SIM unit still just edges it at $500.

I'm still in for the SIM unit, but would love to hear your feedback on the ET unit once you have it...

John - the HDMI connector is only "redundant" if you're using the Red LCD screen - it is very much not redundant if you're using the Carrion (as we will be) and want menu output through the HDMI out to the DVI in on the Carrion screen. Looks like we'll be getting the non-downconverting version anyway, so no great shakes from our pov, but something you might want to reconsider?

I know...but when/if we sell the downconverting model, the price point will be for the highest end client. (We do understand the RED concept...please no flames about the RED revolution being only about the cost, but there will be professionals using this gear, and they will be using high end HDSDI input on boards) We have left the HDMI and USB open for those who desire it.

The most cost effective route would be the SIModified Breakout Box, and velcro the AJA to the side.
