  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hot diggittty damn! SATA!

The write speed quoted in specs like that is a burst speed. It is not a sustained write speed. While it may be able to burst to that speed, it could very well choke on ~30MB/s sustained write.
 
The word in another thread was "yes, it can be" but it depends on how much power is available on your USB/FireWire bus.

Apparently it works on MacBook Pros, most desktops and some other laptops. Or something like that.
 
This was discussed before with some of the more technical messages disappearing.

It was said that although the interfaces are SATA, they may be using custom firmware in the devices to get the sustained write speeds they need. I.E. SATA plugs and technology but not 100% SATA compliant interfaces.
 
Is the Red Drive bus powered over USB2? That seems unlikely to me, with two drives inside, but I don't have one in front of me.

You can power one notebook HDD with the standard amount of power that comes from a USB port but definitely not two. There are USB port designs that provide more power but I've only seen them on a few docking stations.

No, you can't power the RED-DRIVE over USB. if you use USB than you need to provide an external power source via the power jack connector. For FireWire 400 or 800 though its different. You can power it over the Firewire cable, and I often do so from my 15" MacBook Pro laptop without any issues.

One other comment. The camera is tuned to the digital media that its working with so its checking to see what's connected. Swap out the physical media in a RED-DRIVE and we can't guarantee that the response time we expect to see is there anymore. And that could have repercussions for clip playback, dropped frames, etc. At the end of the day a camera is a real time device and this data synchronization issue is critical to guarantee performance.

If you connect a RED drive to your macbook Pro can you transfer files recorded onto a compact flash to the Red Drive? Is it then possible to connect the red drive to a camera and playback the files to the camera monitoring?

I know this is not normal workflow but curious.

I think you should be able to do that, but I'd suggest that you stay within the same Build.. i.e dont take CF card data recorded on Build 10 and try and play it back on a camera with Build 14 as it may not (probably wont) work.

As you say this is a non-satandard workflow, but give it a try...
 
Thanks for the clarification Stuart (about USB bus power). I was under the impression that it the port would power the RED drive.
 
That's an interesting question:

Would you be able to upgrade the capacity of the REDDrive with future [bigger capacity] laptop drives, which would reside inside the REDDrive body and function the same as the current ones?
 
what about SATA to 2x CF adapter card which can be used instead of HDD?

Fundamentally no, we'd need to do some work on the firmware first as the RED-DRIVE and camera are "tuned" to each other. Think of it this way - its not like a word processor where the absolute response time to a data request really isn't an issue, being a real time device we need to know for sure when things will happen.
