Driving around the Tala game reserve the other day in south Africa. Saw a couple of Giraffes playing conkers with those two stumps they have on their heads. There I was thinking it was just a couple of lovers necking when WHOOMPF, one of them gets a fair old whack to the plums and topples over right in front of me.

I only had the 400D with me so I got out of the car, the Lions had just eaten anyway, and approached to see the victim comatose and making some weird sounds. maybe 'Giraffeese' for Ohhhh Gawwwwwwwwd, Me plums, he got me in the plums.....wahhhhhhh" or something like that??

Snapping away the one on the floor wheezing away and the victor standing over him in a "Come and have a go if you think your hard enough" kinda way, allowed me to get this shot. Glad he didn't see me as competition, even though I have been told I've got quite a long neck!!

Wow, nature is so awesome.
In moments like this it will be ideal to have one Scarlet in your pocket ...

Mark I read this story and I have tears coming down my face from laughter. Thanks for that

where is SCARLET when you need her??

great story, great picture, all it needs is motion....

Jay,
Glad I could brighten up your day. Never went back to the reserve but I hope the victim got back on his feet.

The wildlife around here is amazing.

Cheers,
Mark.

That is a great story and a nice shot. The victor standing over the vanquished reminds me of the famous Mohammed Ali photo after he knocked (someone) out.

To make the story better for me though can you clarify the term "plums"?

I believe "plums" would be camdirese for testicles.

Great pic, CamDiver! iTala is a fantastic reserve - good choice! Usually they are pretty excellent in terms of finding you a lot of animals in a short time... were you with one of their guides, or on your own?

BTW, if you are ever planning on staying there for an extended time, you need to find a South African and book with them. They have steep off-season discounts for locals (and their foreign friends if they are in the same party) since the prices are otherwise impossibly expensive for us...

I stayed there once - my roommate from the USA was in South Africa and we wanted to take him somewhere really nice for two days. Even with the discount it was still expensive but the place is frikkin' incredible.

BTW, I'm sure you could do nice filming with a Red One, no Scarlet required. But sometimes it is nice to put the camera down and just watch the scene unfold in front of you...

Thanks, you now made me homesick.

Plums, Nuggets, Walnuts, Family Jewels, Bollocks all the same thing. Testicles dear chap.

Cheers,
Mark.

He took a shot in the pills....Well, I do hope the victim lived to see another day really.

Yup, that kinda sums it up. A speech bubble with "Oohhh me Plums" would round it off nicely though.

Hey Bruce, sorry to make ya homesick mate. I understand the financial issue. This country is damn awesome on the nature side of things but dogged on the inflation and crime. I guess being here in KZN for the first time and being a $ salaried geezah I don't really see the deeper issue but it sure is understandable. I actually bought a Land Rover defender 110 Tdi when I got here as it was cheaper than a 6 month rental. As such I have been self driving through the Game Reserves and Parks alone. It took me 3 hours to drive 5km in Hluehlue between two water holes and I loved it. Rangers as they do this every day are kinda immune to the impact of seeing an Elephant for the first time.

Love the country, love the nature.
Cheers,
Mark.
P.S I am planning a five day stopover in Dwesa close to mKimbati on the Wild Coast toward the end of the month. Kruger is slotted for the first two weeks of April spending that time between the central reserve camps of Balule and Salana.

Imagine a Land Rover, a tent that fits on the extended roof rack, a Canon 400D with an EFS100-400mm f4.-5.6 with a 2x extender, an EFS 10-22mm, 18-55mm and Tamron 90mm f2.8 Macro. A tank full of gas, 8 Jerrycans and a Visa Card!!! Taking a break from the Tigers to wrap this project. Man its gonna be wild.

Cheers,
Mark.
