Hello there,

first of all, this is my first thread and I have to say I love this forum, just everything that has to do with RED is just great.---> I wish I could get one right now...but yeah money is allways a problem...and that's why I'm making this thread.

I'd like to know from you people; wich one is the cheapest package with the RED? I mean what would you need to have at least to use it?
Do you need the EVF or just the LCD would be enough?

I don't know I'm trying to do the cheapest package possible but I don't really know exactly what to choose and what not... I thought about 25-27K

what could you recomend?

Thanks a lot...

17500 Red one body
1250 Base Production Pack
6500 RED 18-50 mm zoom
1700 RED LCD
1450 RED Power Pack
900 Red Drive
500 Red flash module
199 Flash 8gb

That's already 30K, I don't think you can leave something out of this package.
But you have to be aware that if you don't own any equipment yet, there are a lot of things out of the red package that you will need, for example ( mattebox, nd filters, follow focus..)

This topic have been discussed many times before, try a "search" (I know it doensn't always works so well..)

Renting is always a viable solution too... Packages available with lenses, media, support, for around $900/day, or $8,000/month

you could always drop the lens and rent that would bring it within his budget...

It is possible, but to always have to rent a lens to use it, isn't really a option I would choose.

But you can get the nikon mount and use nikon lenses....:)

EDIT: The smiley looks a lot like I'm joking about this, but I'm really serious. I think it would be a really good option if you have a limited budget.

Thanks for your replies,

yes I thought of getting a nikon mount too but is it just for Nikon PL lenses or also SLR Lenses?

Cose right one I got the Sony PWM-EX1 with the Letus Extreme 35 a Tote Vision HD Monitor and Nikon SLR lenses---> 24mm f2.8, 28mm f2.8, 35mm f2.0, 50mm f1.4 and 130mm f2.8

I mean if I could use this lenses than it'll be okay I guess... I mean they aren't so bad...

actually I paid over 14K for this package and I like it but I just hate to use a 35mm adaptor cose it's just so useless when you have to shoot handheld---> and I think if I pay like another 7-8k I'll get the Red I think I'll have to think about it...

what would you recommend a RED Drive or a couple of 8Gb cards?

and do you know how much would it take if I'll order one on the next couple of days? ? thanks a lot again for everything.... ;D

With so many Reds shipping, getting weekend Rentals--even in L.A. is proving to be a pain and then you need proof of insurance. I wouldn't get it without a lens.

I ended up getting the 18-50 and am also planning on getting the Birger when it comes out. When Birger is fully shipping--that will be the best low budget alternative--the onlything cheaper would be a dumb mount.

Also, don't forget about sound & sticks!

Red is not necessarily for the budget minded...

The Nikon adapters, planned to be released, (soon?) will all be able to fit the SLR lenses you've listed.

I don't see how you could come close to these numbers unless you already have all of the sound gear, PL lenses and a heavy duty tripod. Just as an example, the tripod you will need must support 30+ lbs. I got the smaller version of the recommended size of tripod (Oconnor 1030) and it was $6K.

What about Matt Box? Follow Focus? Monitoring?

Unless you have a lot of these things sitting around, I wouldn't recommend trying to build a kit from scratch with less than $40K--if not $50K.

I ordered the drive and 2 CF and have been very happy with that combo.

BOTTOM LINE

I wouldn't order any accessories until your camera is ready to ship. It is all moving so fast that if you haven't ordered yet by the time your camera comes you will have a proven Birger mount, tons of 3rd party accessories and many other drive and CF choices to choose from.

The reservation is for the Camera Body--all of the other choices can wait until your camera is ready to ship. Maybe by then there will be better 3rd party options to the base production pack? 16 gig CF cards? better camera mounts? Who knows.

NAB is in april and will bring a bunch more 3rd party support, I would think, as well as Scarlett--that may confuse your choices even more!

From what I heard camera's ordered now will come sometime in the early to mid summer--but don't quote me on that!

I didn't know whether I had to wait just as long for the accessories as the body until I read your posting Thom. If I don't, why order the accessories now. Thanks for clearing up.

Actually, I am sitting on the fence to check out Scarlet for my needs, especially since Red Team told me that deposit is not transferable. NAB is almost here, why rush. Agree with you.

The Nikon mount is for Nikon SLR lenses. Nikon glass that has been rehoused for a PL mount will work with the (ahem) PL mount. The RED Nikon mount is $800, or you can go with a third party provider for less. Still much cheaper than buying new PL lenses.

If you've already got an HD monitor that can hook up to the RED's standard video outputs, you can probably skip both the RED EVF and the RED LCD for now. But they both come highly recommended.

Deciding between storage options really depends on what you do. If you do a lot of documentary work that requires a tape's length of recording time, get the RED DRIVE. If you need to run around handheld and can make do with shorter (< 10 minute) takes, go with the CF module.

It's the other stuff that'll get ya. Do you have a tripod that will support 30+ lbs? Even the cheapest routes (the Bogen Manfrotto 526, or finding something used on eBay) can run you $1000+ easy. Better options start at around $4-5k and go up quickly from there. What about sound? Lights? Filters/follow focus/mattebox? Jib/dolly? Editing equipment?

Man, it hurts my wallet just thinking about it.

You dont need the red drive or the 18-50 for the cheapest most basic package.
You WILL however need to either rent PL mount lenses or you can opt for the nikon mount once available. You can even get away without the base production pack.. but then your basically cradling the redone body like a football to shoot

There are alternatives to the base production pack, you'll save maybe $100 if you try to fully emulate it piece by piece. It depends on how close you want to emulate the base production pack really. If all you need is handles and rod support, you'll save quite a bit by getting just those. The bottom of the RED has mounting holes so you could stay all tripod if you wanted to.

I'm struggling with this decison too. It would be nice to just get the base production pack and be done with it but I want to conserve for my Nikon lens budget. I own a screw on Formatt mattebox, so I don't neccessarily need to get a new mattebox to mount on 15mm/19mm rods. But I might need rods so I can put on a shoulder support and handles. But then I keep thinking "Will I really need shoulder support?". I tend to stick to tripod and dolly shooting mostly, I don't like the Steadicam look, if I've ever needed that I just went hand held, apparently nobody can tell the difference these days *cough*Bourne Ultimatum*cough*.
