  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Noise

Sometimes I wonder if you like to actually give any useful input, or you are simply looking to prove yourself right in the most inopportune times.

Either way, good luck.

I did give very useful information. You were just clueless to it Nathan. There are a multitude of audio problems with this camera. I listed all of them and for over a year now many have on a regular basis brought them up with no response or action by red and you state "don't worry the gears are grinding" as the reason red will address this. Ha quite nieve IMO. Then you go on to start a thread that posts that RED should start to consider starting some marketing, what a joke are you that blind that you can't see that all they have done with NAB and apple and reduser is a huge marketing tool. Sorry Nathan but I am afraid I have written you off as a 16 year old kid.

What is the problem here exactly? Are you a RED user? Do you ever expect to be? I'm sorry if I don't understand why you have been granted some sort of diplomatic immunity from the laws of common sense and respect in a professional realm. It is quite unfortunate, as you seem like a smart person who indeed has good info to add, that you seem to hide all your useful input with some sort of obscure, off-colour humour that sure pleases the audience. But, to me at least, you have looked like a fool the whole time.

You make a Wendy's-eating Hoff look respectable, quite frankly.

Nathan you should come to NAB, I like the cut of your JIB we should hook up.

Do you like gladiator movies?

Why do threads degrade into bickering and arguing all the time? Can't we just focus on the task at hand and get problem-solving instead of arguing?

I agree, unfortunately the sound problems ironically fall on "deaf ears" to red. There have been a few of us that lobbied for better audio solutions over a year now but none of it was addressed or changed by red. I and many others have almost given up all hope of this camera being audio compitant. It is sad but seems like the way it has gone. I have seen nothing over the last year that makes me think that red has much of a priority on the audio side of this camera. I sure hope I am way wrong with this thinking.

Georg Knowing computer gear as I do .Sounds like you have a defective fan I would ask RED to replace the fan sounds like you have a bad one. Actually I have a bad one right now too. 2nd one this year. Fans vary in quality. There are actually people who make a living quieting computers down. They are pretty quiet after. Good luck Maybe Team RED needs another fan supplier?

sigh... i guess i'm an addict. i'm back and talking on a thread. actually, i am interested in your tests, steve. thanks for posting and contributing.

DPsurfer - you had two fans replaced on your RED in one year?

People complain about the fan being loud. However we ran in quiet mode and it was great. MUCH quieter than a film camera and even quieter than the fan in the Sony 900. You can switch it over to HOT mode and then of course it sounds like a damn microwave. We were inside a padded cell (mental insitution type set) with loads of lights and several crew and cast and it was hot and sweaty. The quiet mode seemed fine. Actually the loudest part of the camera believe it or not, was the RED LCD monitor!!! It has this humming buzz type thing going on, and was loud as hell. Sound kept complaining. Don't know what that was about. There was a slight knock on the LCD screen when we recieved it, so perhaps it was dropped by the previous crew (BBC Waking the Dead) damaged it and it was making the humming sound due to this. Tyr ofr yourself. Noisy monitor though...

This was posted by an AC on cinematography.com today. I have suspected for a while now that loud camera issues really vary a bunch from camera to camera as owners comments range from very loud fans to very quiet fans.

The AC puts up a pretty good unbiased post of the camera but states that he found the camera to have 5-6 stops of DR at the very most. I question if he even saw the raw images in post and assume he is judging the 720p output. I have found the processed footage in post to be more in the 8-9 stop range.

I've shot sync on at least 10 shows now and haven't yet had a complaint about the fans. If indeed yours does not go quiet, and by that I mean inaudible unless your head is right next to the camera, then something is wrong.

Thirded (Does this word exist?). Even with the Red raid.
And I *am* super audio critical - check out my site.

I have most of the high end audio tools - and filtering away noise is like retouching a photo.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it´s impossible.

Now, if we´d only had phantom power back........
And did I mention the start up roar?

OK, that's a concern. Either I have super-sensitive hearing (unlikely given the way I've abused my ears) or something is amiss. More testing afoot. Good to hear that the audio is potentially perfect. I wonder if this has something to do with the fact the I'm in Australia, and even a cool day is hot. I might slap some gel packs on and see if things quieten down.

Georg No I'm talking about my computer. Red uses some kind of computer internals in there so the issues are similar; cooling is critical.

Often when there is a computer overheating problem simply slapping an extra fan in the case helps. Again some fans are noisy some not.

These issues of fan noise are worth discussing definitely. A padded room is not going to test the issue.

On some features I've operated we've swapped out film cameras that were just too noisy. Platinums and Milleniums. It always shows up in a quiet, wooden room where the actors are talking softly to one another. In these situations there is no option as Sanjin suggests to shoot on a longer lens from further away. Doing so simply for a noisy camera is not a good story telling solution in any regard.

I think the hope should be to eventually have the Red camera be better than these film cameras in quiet shooting situations.

I'm surprised that some people have been hassled for suggesting areas that they think the camera could be improved in. It's what this forum is for surely.

I think the problem is sometimes we are going by second, thrid hand reports. Not always, but sometimes that is the case. That's why in my tests, I want to be somewhat scientific about it (as much as i can be, I'm no scientist). I will setup a video camera that will be documenting the tests so people can get an idea on where the mic is placed, how far from the camera, and they'll have the actual recording to judge on their own. Even then, the best test is to use the camera, and see if you find any issues. But I want to help the community any way I can because it's good for all of us. And many others have been very helpful to me in my time on this forum.

audio difficulties

I think the problem is sometimes we are going by second, third hand reports.

Another difficulty is that different people are listening to different fans. The noise a fan makes at a given speed can be affected by very small variations in the surface finish of the bearings. As others have pointed out some fans are worse than others even with everything else the same.

If replacing the fan with a hand-selected quieter model doesn't do the trick then there are more extreme solutions possible... quite a bit of work has been done on "silent cooling" for PCs. After all Red is a computer, with a bunch of custom hardware & software. Using heat pipes and a big enough external finned heatsink, a fanless and pumpless solution might be possible. It would add size to the camera, which is probably undesirable.

How replaceable are the fans? I wonder if this is a service that Red will offer. Otherwise, I see warranties being voided, etc. I'll be powering up my camera tonight. I'll let you guys know my initial reaction.
