i heard the only reason scratch is not available on mac is the lack of NVIDIA support. so is it possible now to run scratch on mac? maybe not full featured but a portable, cut down version of it for on side previewing?

Don't forget multi-touch!

I wish they would offer 1920x1200 in the 15" model already. I've had it on my aging HP laptop for 3+ years and hate the giant form factor of that 17" beast.

Not really a "new" macbook pro... Looks to me like a minor spec-bump and price adjust, multi-touch trackpads. Wheeee... Call me when they update the CPUs and video chipsets.

What's everyone's impressions of the specs?

I guess the question is, have they been improved enough to improve Redcine performance? Or do we still need to wait for tweaks to the drivers? My biggest disappointment was buying a MB Pro only to later find out that they don't work great with Redcine.

I thought the nVidia drivers have been fixed?

I just wish they did their performance comparison against the previous MB Pro with Core 2 Duo instead of only the really old MB Pro with Core Duo. There probably wasn't much of a speed increase in the apps they tested.

I guess I overlooked the Penryn update since they're not offering the 2.8GHz version. I thought 512MB for the 8600 was already an option, at least on the 17". Anyway, Intel's chipset to fully support Penryn won't ship until May, so like most other Penryn notebooks, there probably won't be much (if any) performance increase. And by June/July, the quad-core mobile CPUs should be here or really close. But the Penryn CPU does run cooler and eats less power. So I guess this is a nice upgrade and it looks like prices came down a bit for the drives and RAM.

Really? That seems like a lot, but I'm not an expert on those new chips, so maybe you are right. It's all moot for me though if Redcine doesn't play nice with the MB Pros in their current state.

Curran, did Leopard fix the drivers? I'm still running 10.4.11

Just got back from the Apple store with a 2.5 15" MBPro.:w00t:

Please test it out with REDCINE for us.

Also, if you know anyone with an older MB Pro, compare it against theirs in performance.
