hee hee, funny stuff from a guy who feels a need to repeatedly flog a child for the naive stuff that he posts online and and then elicit group laughs at his expense .

Sorry, I did not realize you were a "naive child". Everything makes a lot more sense now.

...and feels a need to throw around his day rate of $1500/day, as if it proved his worth....

Your reading, not so good. What I stated was every qualified DP I know on any major northamerican city charges a day rate of $1,500+. I never stated what my day rate was.

but I think you make a mistake when you say RED is servicing the million dollar movie market.

Good point, I probably phrased that poorly. I didn't mean to imply RED is not good for other things. But I do think RED is a Digital Cinema camera that is perceived as an alternative way to get something approaching a film look.

You're right, EFP can fall into that category - perhaps often. I think RED is a very good alternative to a Varicam or F900. To quote my gaming friends - "RED pwned those guys" IMHO.

The next question is who's going to compete with RED in this price range by creating another 35mm Digital Cine camera? I'm not sure anyone else is going to bother. I'm not sure it makes sense. RED grabbed a market in a way that's tough to counter. Arri, Sony & co. are better off creating $300k cameras that have monster latitude and pwning the major movie market. The challenge they have it RED has a modular sensor and are always one sensor upgrade from dusting them.

I think the big guys are really gunning for the ENG and consumer camera market. Those aren't RED markets. Which is why I don't really anticipate a RED price drop.

I still have no idea what Scarlet is and where it will be positioned. Perhaps it'll be like the Leica of rangefinder cameras.

weirdcrew - really good summary. Also: do you, or any other Londoners have corroboration on the "bodies for free" deal? That's pretty interesting. (Talk about "price tends toward zero"... that was quick.)

And could various others dial back the flamewar a bit? This is actually a pretty interesting thread. Don't wreck it with unnecessary douchebaggery.

That's a question for Johnny who posted it. He should be on this thread since he just posted here as well.

done and done, my apologies to the thread.

to attempt to contribute something more constructive...RED has promised that SCARLET won't compete with RED. if it is an independent, stand-alone unit, how can it not? especially among the EFP base, which, if gibby is correct in his figuring, stands to out-strip the cinema-only base in number of owner/operators. my 2nd RED purchase is certainly on hold until its prototype is released, exerting pressure again on the front end of the queue of existing reservation holders, and i'm sure i'm not alone, among the multi-cam res holders....

That's always been my thinking. If it's a small 2/3" 2K camera you can put SLR lenses on it'll compete with RED. And the F23.

But they have emphasized "pocket". Which makes me think the lens will be fixed and it'll compete with the cigarette box sized consumer cameras. That makes some sense - if it blows all those away in quality and you can put it in your pocket it would be cool to have as a travel camera. As long as posting the footage isn't too painful. Every rich guy will have one.

PM me chaps, I'll tell you who, but I'm not saying publicly just because they haven't started renting yet and its not my company. We're talking one of the biggest and well known outfits in london.

Edit: Fred, its a rental company, not a production company.
