.5k Quicktime: REDTESTS
(No major color correction on most shots, gamma issues from redcine to FCP, blah blah.)

On Wendsday DeadMike and I took his RED out for a little adventure around Seattle. I brought along a bunch of optical goodies, and a little hand held rig to test. Since this was my first time getting any actual quality time with the camera, it was all about learning the menus and getting proficient operating it. We had build 14, so we put to use a lot of the new functions.

We had some minor issues, nothing that held up a shot mind you,but little glitches. We were running build 14 so it was to be expected. Things like switching between 4k, 3k, and 2k and not having the onboard update. Random "RocketIo" errors, It hung on formating once etc.

Overall I was very impressed, I see some room for improvement as well. The build quality was awesome, and DeadMike had a ton of ET stuff that was just flawless. I cant say enough good stuff about the Ultra rods and the 15mm topmounts. The Arri style base was built really well.

I brought some glass I had on hand:
Canon 600mm f4.5
Canon 400mm f2.8
A couple of ancient Arri std mount primes
and a "cokebottle" Angenieux 12-120 2.2
We also had DeadMikes RED 18-50mm

The old primes worked so amazingly well. It was shocking to see how well some of the 60 year old Arri IIc lenses worked on the new kid in town. Very impressive and unique looking.

Wow. Wonderful stuff. I like the last two the best. I'd love to see some stuff in motion. :)

Very clean. Nice compositions! So I'm assuming your Canon glass been converted to PL mount?

yep, both to universal mount then to arri B or standard, and then a PL adapter on those.

Really nice, by why post such a tiny video? I wish people would post 720 or 1080, since it gives a better idea about noise and image quality.

Mike, those look wonderful. I have a hard enough time getting myself and a bag of fruit through the market at times. I imagine it was a fun trip with 30lbs of attention-grabbing camera. Great shots - the skies and profile are really striking.

Once I get some gamma issues worked out I'll post a higher res.

Darn, I love the look of that old lens!!! I saw the frame and suddendly I was transported back to the old technicolor/cinemascope movies of the 50's I used to watch reruns of in my neighborhood cinema when I was little, what a distinctive AND nice look!

Noise is an issue, but I was more bothered with the REDCINE>FCP via quicktime gamma issues. I'lll try a render to DPX or tiff then a AE>FCP trip and that should fix it.

As far as noise goes, it seems to be livable but a little worse than I expected for such a large chip. Who knows what build 15 will bring.

RUDI: Later today i will post pics of the lenses used and fullress framegrabs from them. Like I said i was very impressed by the old glass.

Mike can you do me a favor and do some low light conditions. It can be in the house during daylight but shot in the dark corridor looking towards the brighter living room etc. Basically do tests where there's low light conditions but still with some detail (mid tones) that's where my fear is about noise. i haven't been able to run tests thoroughly yet, since my camera hasn't arrived yet.

(This is basically the hardest conditions for the sensor - preferably with a brighter source somewhere, something more correctly exposed)

Thanks,

fred

Rudi: Since it wasn't my camera (it's deadmikes) I'll have to live with what I shot. That being said I did shoot some very similar shots on purpose. 1:23-1:34 in the QT I posted. It was very dark in the ally and dusk. We had the 18-50 on and it was WFO at t3. I could have used two more stops for sure in there. I'll take a look at those shots later today. Indeed there was some noise. Any way I think I've stumbled on a bigger issue that I'll be reporting on soon.

Bassam: ??????? what do you mean am I sure? The guy in the shots is the camera owner, our very own DeadMike.

Just saw your Flickr gallery... were you at the Point-No-Point beach? I live RIGHT THERE in Hansville. Small world. Such a beautiful spot.

And really great shots... way to do it justice. Thank you.

Cheers,
Jacob

no, we were at discovery park, in magnolia.

wow. finally some Seattle RED stuff. it looked great!

No permission problems at Pike's Place. We didn't have sticks and it was only two of us so it was no big deal.

So I've finally got around to posting some frame grabs from the older lenses I had on hand. Specifically a 50mm Schneider, a 75mm Schneider, and a 16mm Angenieux 12-120mm. The Schneider's covered 4k because they came off a 35mm Arri IIc, and the Angenieux is the classic Arri S lens. In the past I have always maintained that older lenses, with their lower contrast can look very good on a unforgiving digital sensor.

Included bellow is a small frame grab from each lens and a link to a folder with some more examples, both 4k jpg's and a couple movies for a few of the lenses. These are by no means scientific at all, some of them have a curve applied others don't. No sharpening or noise reduction other than what RedAlert does by default.

It does show that A) you don't need master primes to shoot footage on a RED and B) older lenses can have a great look.
