  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

QT on new Mac Pros - was: Quicktime 7.6.1

Here's my updated QT adventure for today...

I've got a new Mac Pro. I can only install OSX 10.5.1 or later on it, which means it gets installed with QT 7.4. That is a problem, so I use Pacifist to clear 7.4 and install 7.3.1. Bad deal... 7.3.1 on this system crashes, hangs, causes all sorts of mayhem. I re-install, repair, etc.. nothing works. 7.3.1 is broken on this system. 7.4 has lots of issues too.

7.3.1 wasn't working, so I updated to 7.4.1. Everything has been running well now for the last couple hours and I've been hitting it pretty hard. The only issue I am having with 7.4.1 is stuttering playback in the QT proxies. But everything else is working. I can output from REDCINE to prores, I can output DPX, Tiff and EXR stills. Playback in REDCINE on this system is buttery smooth too at half res high... I've got a 3TB RAID I'm working off of -- iometer benchmarks it at 218MB/s, which seems pretty good for 3 x 1TB in a RAID-0.

Anyway, this system is pretty quick... I'll do some better benchmark tests with RC and RA after a bit.

So, for right now, 7.3.1 is still probably the best choice if you can run it OK. So far on this new 8-core 3.2GHz w/8800GT, 7.3.1 has been a bad thing.

Edit> why does playback of 4K 2:1 R3D files give be blue frames with frame buffer errors? Seems to be holding about 8fps, but I get blue frames that flash something to the effect of "can't lock image buffer". ???

I spoke too soon... It looks like my ProRes output via REDCINE is hosed, I just get garbled video past frame 1 most of the time. Had REDCINE crash on me 3 times in the past hour.

I don't think it's QT related, but can't get any changes I make on the color panel to transfer through to any form of output. So REDCINE operation on this system are hit or miss. Restarting seems to clear up some of it for a bit, then it starts going screwy.

Eedit> It's difficult sorting out what is a QT bug and what is a problem or bug with REDCINE... Restarting the system and wiping out the REDCINE project directory and starting over fixes most all the problems. All working well again... For the moment.

System is Mac Pro 8-core 3.2GHz, 16GB RAM, 8800GT video, OSX 10.5.2, QT 7.4.1 w/all OS and pro apps updates installed including Leopard graphics update.

So far, so good

So far, so good

So far my new Mac Pro had not crashed (knock on wood). I've exported 2K DPX files out of Red Cine from 4K 2:1 and they look good. I haven't installed Final Cut or Pro Res yet....

System is Mac Pro 8-core 2.8GHz, 12GB RAM, 8800GT video, OSX 10.5.2, QT 7.4.1 w/all OS updates (but no app updates) installed including Leopard graphics update.

Still a work in progress. I am so reluctant to spend any money yet until some of these issues are resolved and we see what tools will best serve our purpose. In the meantime, I will use my Macbook Pro and experiment. My G5 Quad sits, anxiously wanting to take part in the festivities but I have to keep reminding him that he isn't good enough, he can't play with the big kids. Oh well, keep the tests coming. We'll eventually get all of this sorted out.

No.

Ever since Quicktime 7.3 on xp 64 it crashes about one in two times I open a quicktime. Exporting to AVI inside QT Pro crashes every time. I can't transcode more than about 3 seconds from one quicktime to another in QT Pro. 7.4.1 did nothing to fix it. If anything now even more things are broken. Combustion can't export quicktime now...

I pray that one of these days Divx will just come pre-installed on all systems and I won't ever have another request for quicktime drafts. :gun: :rip_1:

New 8Core system here
7.4 works
7.3 broken
OSX Leopard

Running 10.5.2 on a 2,8 8-core.

QT 7.3 was installed with 10.5.1 when I bought it. Didn't have to upgrade QT to get 10.5.2.

Works fine, as far as I can see.

Have NOT up- or downgraded QT.

Having funny bugs in Shake, though...

Been working fine last night and all morning - it's lunch time now. Only problem is proxies stutter on playback.

Haven't had a chance to give Shake a workout on the new system.

This system rocks. My only complaint is Apple won't supply Windows drivers for their RAID card (or hopefully they will at some point). Then I could boot XP32 and Vista64 on this box too without jumping through a few hoops.

Gavin,

Your problem is XP64 - it's crap. Use XP32 and save yourself the brain damage. If you need access to 64bit functions and more RAM, then load Vista64 (ultimate is highly recommended). I've found it to be way more stable than XP64 and ironically is a lot more compatible with legacy software too.

Yeah, I know it's not a new issue... Just saying that it's the only problem I am having.

Thanks for pointing out the link to that thread. A lot of people probably are not aware of it, especially if they are just upgrading to a new Mac now or have not been working with this stuff much or at all if they haven't had a camera available.

You can't downgrade the OS? 10.4.11 not support that hardware?

Nope. I have OSX discs for most versions of 10.4 as well as 10.5 and the 10.5.1 install discs that came with this new system.

I can install from the 10.5 discs, but OSX won't boot. Same with any 10.4.x version. I can only install and successfully booth the 10.5.1 discs that came with the system and they automatically install QT 7.4.

I'm thinking the three culprits are the RAID card, 8800GT video card and the i5400 chipset. 10.4.x does not support the i5400 chipset, so even if it boots, I would be taking huge performance hits just for lack of chipset support, which in turn means I would probably lose a lot of functionality for attached bus devices, maybe even the Firewire, etc..
