  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

check out how these guys feel about red one

I've actually just done tests with a RED camera and are having problem with low-light situations. Enough for me to stay on 35mm until that's solved. To me what Geoff said seemed very justifiable.

(Don't get me wrong I love what RED wants to do but I found vulnerabilities that hopefully will be fixed)

What kind of problem ?

These guys in this video sure make a solid case for why latitude is so important (color matching scenes that take place during changing lighting etc.). For 24... they don't light shots anymore, they light environments and have to match 3 cameras later. Latitude is everything. I know latitude was always probably the biggest selling point of RED for me.

They say they F23 blows anything else away. They also make a pretty good argument for lightly compressed recording. The HD-SDI out from the the EX1 at 1080P to the upcoming Cineform recorder could be amazing.

Luckily for RED they can mess with the codec and compression quite a bit. Perhaps lower compression recorded to the RED drive will provide the best mix until the next chip comes out. I do sorta wonder what they daughter card they decided not to add would have done.

Build 15.

I have found the camera to not be all that sensitive. I was rating it at 200 to 160 ASA under tungsten conditions. It seems that cleaning up the noise is the way for better DR. I shot some stuff at night on superspeeds wide open. I was able to get enough light from street lights and such but car taillights lost their color when they were breaking. I think we saw that in the F23 vs. red tests.

I still love shooting film when I can, it's been a while. It's not dead. Hell i still like shooting film for stills better than any DSLR.

If I can take Geoff quote from Finner as accurate, Geoff doesn't understand exposing raw images. I know "Geoff is highly respected blah blah blah" at the very least that quote would mean it is agenda driven.

Don't question what I have said Geoff's quote is if you are unwilling to take the time to watch the video. IMO very ignorant.

Well as soon as I drop the money for Hasselblad gear I'll let you know. Don't get so worked up Poi Boy. Remember, you get to live in Hawaii.

Thanks for the advice Geek, you are right. If I still lived in SF though, I could drive up and visit my good friend the Hoff.

Bring your mom. I always appreciate her visits.

What was the point of that "forum".

Here you have a bunch of guys in the audience who have
RED reservations and Geoff and Scott say it is not
good enough for real work?

Seems like Geoff goes out of his way to poo-poo everything RED
and glows about Sony. I guess we know where Geoff's toast & jam
come from. And Scott should know better than anyone why RED
is being used more and more for VFX work???

I just feel sorry for those guys in the audience who were getting
beat up by the "heavyweights". Clearly, cleary Geoff and Scott
are trying to protect their place in the industry before some 22 year
old DP comes up and eats them for breakfast.

I find that very unlikely as gear is nothing without experience and even if that 22 y.o. DP has been shooting since he's 5, he will still have about half the experience of guys like Geoff, Scott or Rodney.

what these guys are saying about red is the truth or not, but for $30,000 worth of equipment better than most sony camera red can give us better quality image and then some. All red user get ready to compete with the big boys
