Brook Willard created one of the greatest threads ever on Reduser. Still number five on the reply charts. What will you rent it for is IMHO part of Reduser history. So Brook, this is an homage to that thread.

Back in August 07, it was all just a theory. Now, I believe over 500 cameras are on the market, and a much greater understanding of the camera and post production.

So consider specifically this package:

Red One Body - PL Mount - CF Module
Base Production Pack
LCD
EVF
No media or power.

I want to know now, truly, what will you rent it for?

Per day is a bad metric. Another Reduser in town rents his Red for 25% less than I do, which makes him look a ton cheaper. But then he's a 4 day week and I'm a 3 day week, so it then makes it the same. So...I'll probably go to a 4 day week soon to match.

Second, and not to be a kill-joy, but unless you are talking about month-long rentals (long enough to bother shipping Reds from coast to coast) then the pricing of someone in another state has no bearing whatsoever on you price.

Third, no one is going to rent a Red package without media or power. This is the biggest problem with this poll. Add in "One power pack and three CF cards"

Fourth, every single Red package I've seen is configured differently. Most owners seem to be forgoeing the "A la Carte" method for the "one price for everything I got" system. As such, it's very hard to compare prices because everyone's package is different.

That's assuming you rent it for more than 4 days at a time. If you do TVC you will likely get your full day rate. We make deals on longer shoots anyways, so what, that's bidnatz.

I kept the package as similar as possible to Brook's original package. The point is to understand the baseline and the change if their is one.

yeah no one rents it out without a power pack and storage.

add that and yeah..this could be a good thread..

it's something we could show people who dont know what red's rental prices are like... go like here.. you dont beleive me.. its 1k a day... std.

Remind me again why this thread is beneficial?

It gives us an idea of how many people need to re-take their high school math courses. :sarcasm:

10 so far!

I droped out of hi skool. May be that iz why I only get 500 a day?

I'll make you a deal. If you bring me a client willing to pay me $1000/day, I will charge them $1000/day.

in Germany the rental price is not a secret.
Regarding to the pricelist of rental companies is 600 Euros every day and 1800 Euros every week. Of cause special price for frequent client.
In China its funny. In jan the price was 1000 US/ day now it already drop because more than one Red reach or will reach the next 2 weeks.

What do you think where the price will be when the 3000 ordered Reds are home by lets say Oktober.

other question..

other question..

how much do you pay for an F900 per day?
in helsinki you pay 1100Euro (1630$) for the 900 (not SR)

.. my thought is: i rather base the price on what the cam delivers not
on what it costs - and i don't care if then people decide to rather buy
a RED for themselves.. why shouldn't they - that's the whole point.

This is a very useful thread.

I guess I'd be in the 500-800 category when I get mine [no lenses].

But there will be a special price for students ;).

Good poll idea!

Please add DIT service option

My theory was that the price would stabalize at $800 per day, (three or four day week etc) That's essentially what the graph is indicating. But already I'm seeing people in NY actually charging less.

IBloom

Ian, you won't see me charging less...
Cheers,
Harry

The usual formula in rental markets is, once there is more offer than demand, 0.5-1.5% of new price/day if booked for >= 5 days.

Expensive houses charge 3%, we seem to do fine at 0.75-1% as we are pretty optimized and rather small, with only 6 cameras en total. (which has advantages and disadvantages :))

I'm with you on this one, I see the rate stabilizing at $800 for the body EVF/ LCD, battery pack and base production pack.

With that bit of kit coming in at ~$23,000 it would take 28 days of rental to repay the kit costs.

Bear in mind though, that the new post work flow is making some renters a bit nervous (hence the lower rates) and that when the work flow becomes more established the market might stabilize higher.

Also, you can't do much with a body, LCD and production pack. They still need storage media, tripods, lenses, mic's ect. and that's where you make your money.
