  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Lunar Eclipse

Hey Steve, if you lost your 5D, would you replace it with the Canon 40D or would you buy the 5D again?
 
And what lens did you grab that picture with? Awesome shot, Steve!
 
I'm just wondering why I'm not seeing an hour-long real-time 4k clip here showing the eclipse in its entirety. Surely someone with the Red Drive and a 600mm lens got ambitious last night... :tongue:

40D has better features and am planning on buying one just for astronomical use. The 5D is in need of replacement but I think Canon is dragging it's feet until they get the new 1Ds into everyone's hands, (me included). My money would be on the new 5D replacement. When the 1Ds gets delivered the 5D will be my full frame back up camera.

Celestron 8" SCT f10 (2000mm), on a very very stable mount. Not the sharpest scope I have but good for planetary work. I wanted to do a time lapse of it but I had just returned home from a two day shoot and could get it together in time. Oh well.... next decade I guess :)

Also the exposure changes from 1/100 sec to 4 secs. from full sun to full eclipse.

Steve, that's very cool. A month ago I bought my Celestron C8 SGT. I also took some photos yesterday night from Queens with it and my Canon 20D. But of course I couldn't set it up right so couldn't do right tracking and the moon looks fuzzy. I basically run to the sidewalk down my house and took few shots. I wanted to get the overexposed part so I had to go to ASA 800 and 0.3''.

Actually it was funny, because I was on the street by my self with this gigantic telescope and a drunk man sat next to me and started confessing that when he lived in Yugoslavia in 1990 he saw 3 UFOs and nobody believed him. Some people told him that that was some experiment from the Russians, but he stated that he knew a lot of physics and no Russian nor American could have done it.The truth is that he kept my photographic session entertaining. Though I was scarred everytime he wanted to look through the view finder.. :sarcasm:

Hey Steve, are you thinking a way to attach your future RED to the telescope? In my case I am buying the Birger mount and would love to be able to connect it to the scope, but it seems I would have to create a specific mount for both the camera and the scope. Have you thought about that?

Very tough for a timelapse. You'd probably have to wait until the eclipse had begun, start your timelapse a few stops overexposed, then cross your fingers. :)
 
Mounting the RED to a telescope would require camera support from the telescope mount to the RED body in addition to the lens mount I think. It would probably require a super heavy duty EQ mount, (Paramount ME etc.), and then it would be possible.
 
in 2010, I hope we shoot in atleast 8k...

Stumbled across this six and a half year old thread and thought this post was interesting for a number of reasons, file size for one. Steve Sherrick was right.
