Wondering if someone has just ordered the drives as I am thinking about waiting on the flash module until a solution is found for 16 or larger memory size.

Car mounts happen. Non gyro heads happen. Helicopters happen. Shaky music video director happens.

I just bought a few 8GB's for now. 2. Man those 16gb's are taking for ever.

I got both and boy am I glad I did. I definitely wanted the longer load of the drive, but I find myself using the CFs more often than not just to shed a few pounds as the entire rig is pretty heavy and every pound helps.

Super valid point on shaky environments. You don't want to be dropping frames at all. We highly highly recommend the CF module....easy to use it for updates as well.

messing around with it were using the mod a lot, its definitely lighter and slimmer.

if you really don't want it we will ship it with out and yes a couple people have it without, not common though.

Thanks guys. I know all the reasons to have it. Just wondering who went without it.

One day if for some unknown reason your RED refuses to write to the disk, or the disk dies, or the cable explodes or whatever - having a second option will save your day and make you a hero!

Not that it will ever happen, but it´s nice to have options.

All we use on set is module, keeps us on our toes and constantly checking the footage.
Feels like a film shoot.

"FILMS OUT CAMERA RELOADS" !!

I'm thinking about it, and I think Jarred mentioned that there were Reds out there without.

Have to decide today... :)

nope.. the only Reds (that I know of) that dont have the modules is Boris and Natasha..

Of all the cameras we have delivered, I am only aware of one customer not wanting the CF Module.

Your rep will take care of it if you do not want one. All I can say is I have NEVER had a customer call in and say "Boy, do I regret getting this CF Module!".

Like Randy mentioned, firmware updates are MUCH faster via CF card than SD card.

Speaking of the CF Module, when you order one, is it installed by RED or do we have to do it ourself? (not that there's something wrong with that...)

I think Jim put it best when he said (and I may be paraphrasing): "anyone who doesn't order the CF module is an idiot."

Actually, I may be mixing that with the Soderbergh quote which was "and anybody who doesn’t embrace the flashcard--regardless of time restraints--is an idiot."

In any case, Flash all the way -- although it'd be nice if it could have been raided or something to get the speed up. I couldn't record 4k 16:9 yesterday and forgot that it was because I'd swapped over to Redcode 36...

I bought mine without one.

Actually, I may be about to regret not getting the CF module. A few minutes ago NASA invited me to the next launch. (Mar 11) Where I will be may be to shakey for the Red Drive. (I expected to be always in studio on dolly.) Maybe oops.

Shuttle launch

It probably doesn't matter anyway, it's a night launch so it would probably be nearly impossible to get a good shot. I don't think they are going to light up the engines so I can set the exposure ahead or time, plus it will change rapidly as the rockets pull away. Would be fun to try though. Expecially since they told me that Sony put a man out there once to test their camera for a launch.
I have not been invited for the purpose of shooting anyway, just a once in a lifetime opportunity to be treated like a VIP. (I'm not.)

Where will you be? I shot STS-122 from the VIP/Press site with the REDDRIVE no problem - you have got to be awfully damn close to have any substantial vibration. Very special permission is required to get closer access than the Press site during a launch. If this is your first launch it probably won't be as loud as you might expect. It is actually a strange sound, more of a crackle than a total roar.

Set it at F8 and see how much latitude we really have!
