Delivery in the fall? Are they announcing this now to try to stem the flood of people swithing brands? They had the market locked up and then just let it go....

My requests?
-Uncompressed audio option
-AVC-Intra video codec
-Better glass than the HVX
-Higher resolution than the HVX. (hvx is 540x960...I'd at least like to see the vertical resolution expanded to 720) (ps, are our eyes more sensitive to vertical or horizontal resolution?)
-Keep it in the $2500-3000 price range
-Keep it SDHC only, high speed card compatible

Basically, I don't understand this camera's target market. Who are this camera's customers? The DVX offered what many pro and amateur videographers and filmmakers believed to be the all-around best standard-def camera there is in the prosumer price range; a DVCPRO-50 tape deck would have pushed the costs up too high, so using DVCPRO compression they made the best camera they could getting in all the features they could afford.
Now Panasonic has the opportunity to capture that demographic again, at a highly competitive price. Instead though they're using a video format that only captures images on par with competing HDV cameras using compressed audio. Didn't Panasonic go against the HDV standard for it's quality issues? So instead of putting in some extra costs towards faster processors, encoders, and improved CCDs for the sake of a better recorded image, they're going to create a product that only pleases the expectations of the casual video viewer and not exceed those of the filmmakers and videographers that bought a DVX one camera generation earlier.
Panasonic has the technology to set the camera ahead of the competition--no expensive tape deck limitations, better processor technology, fast flash memory--but they aren't. And for what? To save the customer an extra $500 MSRP off the camera? I think most customers, at least those who loved what the DVX had to offer in it's day, would pay the extra money for a superior and more versatile product that will get use for the next 5-7 years. I still use my old, standard-def DVX on many occasions, and love it.

I read a whitepaper from Sony about their XDCAM EX product where they detailed that they felt AVCHD not suitable for professional use (especially when compared to the HDV-variant they ended up making).

Given all the existing HVX users poo-pooing the EX1 for it's long-GOP low-bitrate codec, it'll be interesting to see how they feel about this camera using a lower-bitrate long-GOP codec that's generally considered inferior to HDV and it's variants.

"The HMC150 will be available this fall at a price to be announced."

Now it's still winter, February 2008.

Scarlet is coming in April.

How to decide?

Probably go for Scarlet with many other reason(s).

DVX Replacement????????

DVX Replacement????????

I thought that the DVX replacement was called HVX200. I noticed a influx of HVX for sale on ebay.

I had a HVX for a couple years but recently moved to the EX1 which is great.

I wonder if Panasonic will show there hand before NAB on the HVX replacement as well?

for all the advantages of the EX1 in terms of resolution and Low light capabilities I miss the good old Panasonic color... they have always been good at color in small cameras.

Oh well... cameras will keep coming, a bit hard to keep up with it all at times :-)

Can we please put these threads over at the DVUser forums were they belong. I know we're a mix of different shooters that are all about to get the red cameras, but the REDUser forum is more and more becoming a kindergarden then a professional forum discussing topics concerning the RED camera. I don't mind funny posts that we can laugh about but these posts are of no interest to the actual RED community.

Let's get REDUser back on track and leave the little league equipment behind or move it to other forums.

Thanks,

fred

He did post it in the "off topic" section. But yes I do agree there needs to be something done to increase the % of posts with some sort of value or else the most knowledgeable people on this board will go somewhere else.

I am absolutely O.K. with this kind of threads here because I am intereseted on view of other Reduser folks at miscellaneous topics rather than folks from other forums because they are more "kindergarten".

Although I am professional in certain field of broadcast industry I am here on REDuser for FUN too, so therefore I disagree with you.

... nevertheless this is off topic section so if you dont like it dont read it, you dont have to

weirdcrew, I apologize for the tone of my post, it was unprofessional.

I still believe that the word choice of your first post seems to put down a tool that others are using with huge success. That is what I read into it.

Thank you and your absolutely write that my choice of words was wrong. I think that Greg said it best.

Seems like a lot of us, who aren't proud new owners of a Red One baby, are playing the waiting game for a new camera. A lot of us are hedging our bets on Scarlet and I think we might be terribly disappointed. Of course we'll find out in April, long before the HMC even sees the light of day.

So far on paper it sounds like a nice camera, and with the HDMI coupled with the Cineform SOLID, it could be a really nice Indie production camera. Hopefully it performs well.
