  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple- No love for it's "RED" headed step child!

I was following the original "No Love" thread more closely than any in recent memory. I'm entirely convinced by the camera; but workflow (especially PC workflow) is a serious concern for our productions. The closed thread was providing very valuable context for my understandings of how to best work with these stunning images once we have shot them. Perhaps some of these same trains of thought can be resurrected.

Maybe this is why...

Maybe this is why...

Could this be the reason?

The new _F QuickTime Proxy is for use later ... but yes it is full resolution.

That said, no reason the discussion could just continue here, not only the discussion about the discussion...

I can understand why Deanan locked the other thread. Let's just move on, 'aight? Discussion on current workflow methods and upcoming tools is great.

I was the last one to post. I don't have the ability to lock a thread. Jarred knows I'd abuse the power if I had it :)

Ah, so then who did lock it? :umm:

There was some good discussion in there that could probably be continued if the good posts were pulled into a proper new thread. I'll take a loook tomorrow when my brain is working better.

Finner, as a business owner, do you currently rent out your red or rent reds elsewhere? I am trying to understand why both owners and non owners are getting so hostile about a the mac vs pc thing?

Very many of the people on this forum have a vested interest in the RED workflow issues. They are producers, editors, DoPs, post production supervisors, consultants...

What causes a vested interest to lead to the hostile reaction to red? As a producer, etc., if you don't own a camera and you don't like the workflow would you not chose a different camera? Personally, I can't stand the F9xx look and I just don't rent them anymore but at the same time I'm not writing diatribes on why RED sucks because they don't have what I want. Even if I owned one, I'd want to offer curteous and helpful criticism so that my concerns are heard in the best possible light.

Well, I think for the most part this stuff is intended to be constructive. The times when it becomes otherwise are probably just manifestations of frustration.

The cameras are getting out there now, everyone wants to make pretty RED pictures, but it can be pretty muddy waters when it comes post time.

Maybe it's cultural because I was brought up to not act out frustration in public but instead turn it a positive discussion. If we were all in a room with the red team would the tone be as negative as it is here?

I believe you are interpreting things very wrong. I in no way say or think red sucks. I am not hostile towards red. I just feel it is unfortunate the way post has ended up which has little to do with red. Before you make accusations and judgements Ariana you should get all your facts straight. Please take the time and read the whole thread (the initial one that was locked) with the same title as this, you will find it under apple workflow. Then come back and comment here. I am sure when you get more educated on this whole thing you will see it very different. And yes I have a camera on the way very soon, and yes I hope to be able to edit with it better then I have on earlier red shoots.

I did read both threads closely because I'm primarily a PC user and was interested. I'm very impressed with your posts and find them enjoyable to read but when it comes to the these two threads, they do come across as hostile and disrespectful. That may not be your intention but that's how it can be easily be misinterpreted. As a sanity check, I asked my boyfriend (who is ordering a red too, yea!) and he thought that the threads were started purposefully to stir up trouble and be harsh towards red.

Nope not the plan.

Mainly just frustration that apple corners the red post market and does not offer much in the way of a good workflow or introduce any new apps in 10 months of having exclusive rights. We actually have done post with Final Cut since the start of our company, looking at changing that this year due to the poor apple dealings with this.

I would think that Scratch had a better lock on the red post market. Apple seems to be concerned only with editorial. From a post perspective, PC has an advantage because it has a conform solution while apple does not.

Thing is apple is locked in as an exclusive as well and yes apple does not seem concerned hence the problem.

What about color? I would guess that they're working on color support to take advantage of their exclusive. In that case apple will have an end to end workflow? Either way, we're both guessing at what apple is doing.

I have no doubt apple has lots of FCS goodies for us in fact probably a bunch of them are already done. Problem is apple keeps everything a big secret and then springs it all at one time. This makes apple look like big heroes at that time but is very hurtful for people who need the solutions as they are developed. Red is very good at this as they are always feeding out new beta this and that. Wish apple would learn a thing or two from red.

LOL! I'll bet apple is just trying to keep up with all the RED betas and new formats.

I don't really know... how often do adobe and avid release betas?

I'm off Ariana hope you may see me in a slightly different light. I do like to stir up shit a little but my main hope here is that apple does a few things to help ensure red is successful. Sorry I refered to you as being uneducated on the topic when you had read it all. In fact I think you are very smart as I have a real dislike of the f9** cameras as well (ha).
