  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panavision PL mount same as PL mount??

Yes, I looked at the photo --was one of the more beat-up lenses I've seen in a long while. Also odd that it would have a "Clairmont Camera" engraving on the front lens hood ring. Seems more likely it would be some Arri mount, thought it may be old enough to predate an ARRI PL mount, but it seems unlikely to be a PV mount. But who knows with these privately-owned lenses... could have been a formely Clairmont-owned lens that the owner had a Panavision PV mount installed on it.

This is true David. When they first came out Jimmie Beaumonte and later he and I did some mount conversions to PV for private cameramen (Mario Tossi was one if I remember right) as it was the hottest zoom of the day.

looks like this info is past it's use-by date, but to clarify, and I think this is what you needed to know;

Panavision cameras have PV mounts, which will only fit PV lenses.

Arri, and other cameras including Red have a PL mount, which will only fit PL lenses.

A PV lens will NOT fit in a PL mount.
A PL lens will NOT fit in a PV mount

As a general rule, all lenses made by panavision (primos, etc) are PV.
All lenses NOT made by panavision (zeiss, cookes, etc) are PL.

To confuse things, it is possible to change the mount on a camera, or lens. If you are looking at a lens that is not made by panavision, odds are that it will be PL. In the case that it has been modified to PV, I would be very suprised if it couldn't be changed back.

There are older lenses that show up for sale with older mounts like BNCR, Arri Bayonet, etc.

Thanks David. Yes sorry, I failed to mention that was a very simplified explanation only mentioning PV & PL mounts, in response to the original post which was asking if there is a difference between PV & PL.

The main difference between the two (as far as using them on a camera);

PL has a locating pin in the mount between "1 & 2 o'clock" (approx)

PV has a locating hole at "6 o'clock" (the locating pin is in the lens)
