  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What matteboxes are you all planning to buy?

Hi all. . .

Is there a reasonably-priced RED-quality mattebox out there somewhere? What are you folks planning on using? And, perhaps more importantly, aren't the RED's rails 19mm? I've read where someone wants to use the RedRockMicro mattebox, but isn't that for 15mm rails? How, exactly does one get 19mm rails into a 15mm hole? :-)

If your matte box is designed to take only 15mm rods, Then you need to buy 15MM ADAPTER.

Pending favorable reviews, I'll be going with the Redrock Micro mattebox, probably with the 19mm option (a little more expensive than the 15mm, last I heard). No way I'm spending thousands on a mattebox for a personal indie project.

Arri MB-14, MB-20, and LMB-5. I love those boxes.

I have both Arri and Chrozeil matte boxes. They both are very Good! As an owner operator I would suggest the Chrozeil, it is smaller & lighter. But I do have to say the Arri is built more robust and is a bit more $.

Ask yourself how you will use it. Do you need to filter wide (14mm) or large (Ang. 24-290) lenses? Do you like to stack many filters or shoot clean? If you need to hold several large filters go with a good 6x6 matte box. If the occasional pola or nd is used then a good 4x5.6 will be great.

If you use filters, do your self a favor and pony up for a good matte box. You will have enough to conquer on set with out fighting your cheapo matte box!

Cheers,
Rich
