  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone interested in a Leica mount for the RED?

Hi Mike and all,

I will look into this a bit further, but I really want to finish up the FD mounts first. We will finalize the order with our vendors on December 10th and I will have a bit of time right after to look at a Leica solution. I am not really worried at all about any of the "complex machining" as none of this is really much of a challenge to our guys. They do all sorts of tiny moving precision parts all the time.

What may be overlooked in the "dummie flange" concept is that it isn't a flat surface that you can just mount an extracted mount to. Its recessed and very precision so the mount has to match the flange to reuse any of the pieces we have developed. The adjustable FFD feature is simple but necessary as far as I am concerned. Even if your mount is perfect, don't assume that the sensor plane is exact in relationship to the body.

The number of 25 pieces is a good minimum, less than that and the setups get amortized over to few of pieces.

Give me a bit and I'll try to have some firm answers to what, when and how much.

Thanks,

Kevin

I am VERY interested in LEICA both R and M mounts and I have the feeling that quite a few people would be interested in those. Also, perhaps some existing users would like to try LEICA on RED so some of them might order it too.

Ditto. If M mount works it will be really cool.

Better yet, make a simple mechanical Canon EF mount (should be inexpensive) that we can easily put almost anything on with adapters commonly available in still photo market.

Yes it is an extension tube for the Visoflex, but it has a fantastic M mount on the end. I've had it on the shelf forever, and am ready to sacrifice it the the RED gods, or at least Kevin so he can crank out a mount!

Kevin quoted me 25. However I'm not sure he fully grasped what I was asking for.

In my emails I was asking for a single "dummie" flange and I would provide the actual lens mount ( I have a spare on the shelf). So he wouldn't need to do any of the complex machining of the mount itself, and the spring loaded retaining pin.

He sound's pretty busy so I'm not sure how far he wants to take this.

That looks like a visoflex.

I'm not sure how the wider M lenses would do with vignetting but I've been meaning to test the next time I have the mount off. None of M lenses I have
fit inside the PL :).
(the cron 28/2 almost fits..)

I'd actually love to convert my noctilux to PL but it's way too fat unfortunately. (unless someone thinks it would work)

Deanan,

Yes that is Leica adapter Viso-R. See both sides below.

Hmmm...might be very versatile.

Is it faisible Kevin ?

Thanks everyone for the interest.

I agree that stacking "adapters" is far from ideal. We will approach this as a dedicated mount as it looks like there will be enough interest to justify the effort.

We are finalizing the production run for the Canon FD mount now. All orders submitted by December 10th are scheduled for delivery around the end of December. As soon as we finish these, we will be starting on a Leica mount. Similar to the FD mount, we will post a rendering first and then follow up with photographs of the prototype mount.

More information to follow as we progress.

Thanks Kevin.

Great news.

Great Kevin, count me in for Leica mount! It is best glass.

Just noticed that the SI-2K can be purchased with a Leica "R" mount using P+S Technik's universal mount system, which can host a bunch of other mounts as well.

B4 ($1,355)
BNCR ($493)
C ($109)
Canon EF ($314)
Contax ($314)
Leica R ($340)
Nikon F ($314)
Panavision ($493)
PL ($273)

Nice to have that many options. Wish I could have all of these with the RED. But if Kevin delivers the Leica "R" mount for the RED, I'll be a happy puppy.

Can we get an opinion on the type of mount for the Leica; hardmount (no FFD adjustment) or adjustable (with FFD adjustment)? There is a modest difference in the cost of the two approaches. We went with a shimless FFD adjustment on the Canon FD mount, but want to find out what the consensus is for the Leica.

Thanks,

Kevin

First lets be clear Do you mean R or M?

If it's an M mount, hard mount would be fine, since the lenses really wouldn't be in any critical scale focusing situation. The barrels are to small for a follow focus, and the lens markings are to inferior for scale focusing. Meaning that a super critical flange depth isn't as necessary. As eye focus will be used more often.

FFD = flange focal depth (the distance between the lens seat and the film/imager plane)

Shimless in this context refers to a method of adjusting the FFD. In many cameras, the depth is change by the addition or removal of metal shims to achieve the ideal FFD. A shimless design offers a different method (other than shims) to achieve the adjustment of the FFD.

Damn! For thirty years, myself and evey other camera and optical tech. and engineer I worked with in Hollywood thought it stood for flange focale depth.
What a bunch of boneheads we were. lol

Be carefull what you take for fact in wikipedia.
