  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone interested in a Leica mount for the RED?

I have been contacted by another person here on reduser to find out if I would be willing to produce a Leica lens mount similar to the Canon FD one that we just completed. If there is enough interest, I would be happy to produce a solution as long as RED has no objections.

Anyone else interested?

I am for Leica RED mount too but already ordered Birger Canon EF and RED Nikon F mount.

Actually Birger Canon EF would be quite enough because can get a lot of adapters from other

lens brands like Nikon-F, Leica-R, M-42, Hasselblad, Zeiss-Contax, Olympus OM, Pentax-K, Minolta SR, Rollei QB, Canon FD, etc...

hmmmm.......I wonder who that might be? :)

Edit: too late. Damn iPhone.

Hi Kevin,

Good call !!!

I'll take a Leica mount AND a Canon FD mount

..unless you tell me that i won't sacrifice any optical quality by using your Canon FD mount and a Canon to Leica adapter.

thanks !

Actually, the Birger EF mount won't accommodate Canon FD glass as the FFD is less than the EF, so, without optical element(s) it would never focus to infinity nor would it exhibit proper back focus behavior. Hence the reason that we developed this mount to begin with.

Will this Leica mount provide 3 cam coupling for the operation of an optical mechanical rangefinder to use in the place of the EVF?

More Leica adapters

More Leica adapters

I somebody could make RED adapter for Leica R and also RED adapter for legendary Leica M lenses.

Leica M>>MOUNT TYPE>>bayonet>>distance flange to film/sensor plane=27.95 mm (or 27.80? mm).

Leica R>>MOUNT TYPE>>bayonet>>distance flange to film/sensor plane=47.00 mm.

The Leica R mount would be a fairly simple adaptation of the FD design we have now. The M mount would require a different approach as the FFD is under the practical minimum for conventional (without additional optical elements). Again, if there is an interest, we will look into this.

I think that for those that are going to be using any of the newer, electronic lenses, the Birger is a great solution, but I would strongly recommend against using optical adapters with any high performance lens mount. My personal interest is in straight forward, purely mechanical lenses.

Are these the Leica Noctilux M series? with the nice black finish?

LEICA M MOUNT miam!

LEICA M MOUNT miam!

I am strongly interested in a Leica M mount for the RED camera.
How long and how much would it take roughly for doing it ?

If I where to use leica glass, I might consider ordering an ekstra 4/3s mount. This will open a lot of leica options in the future. All electronic of course...

check out this anouncement

That could be a nice 2k option. I am not shure about the math, but i believe you could shoot it at 4k too, and then crop for vignetting and get a much better resolution than 2k. Also I have noticed some nice fast leica primes in the D series
just a thought...

The 4/3 mount lenses are pretty crap frankly. They are poorly made and wont stand up to the rigors of shooting, plus they lack any mechanical control at all.

I'm they guy who contacted Kevin about a Leica M mount. I'm very interested in having one of these made. It' doesn't sound like he is going to be able to do it so I will more than likely have what I need made around here. I have a lot of Leica M glass, and some of it is very unusual/fun. I don't see this mount as being a practical shooters tool, more like a camera nerds toy. The lenses are too small to be used for everyday work, but it does open up the possibility of some fun glass. All the Leica screw mount glass would also work with an adapter. i already have a bare Leica mount, so all I need is a tube of the proper depth to mount it to the body.

There are a lot if issues using short flange focal length lenses on a chip based camera. Mainly that the light exits the lens at such a steep angle it causes vignetting on the chip due to the recessing of the sensors photosites. This is an issue, but it only effects the extremely wide lenses, and to me would be a small price to pay for such a cool toy.

I am VERY interested in LEICA both R and M mounts and I have the feeling that quite a few people would be interested in those. Also, perhaps some existing users would like to try LEICA on RED so some of them might order it too.

Kevin, how many people ( buyers) do you need to be motivated in making
a Leica M mount for RED ?
10, 20, 50 ?
It is such agood idea !
Best lenses and so small, unique for discrete cinematography,
exactly what I am looking for !
The Leica R are great too, but bigger, heavier, only the optical quality
is an argument while, with M, the tiny size is another.
Some people might even think the M lenses are not fit for an AC to manipulate and they are right
but there are cases where the lightest equipment and crew will record
where big obvious equipment will not.
So, when do you start ?!!!!!

Kevin quoted me 25. However I'm not sure he fully grasped what I was asking for.

In my emails I was asking for a single "dummie" flange and I would provide the actual lens mount ( I have a spare on the shelf). So he wouldn't need to do any of the complex machining of the mount itself, and the spring loaded retaining pin.

He sound's pretty busy so I'm not sure how far he wants to take this.

That looks like a visoflex.

I'm not sure how the wider M lenses would do with vignetting but I've been meaning to test the next time I have the mount off. None of M lenses I have
fit inside the PL :).
(the cron 28/2 almost fits..)

I'd actually love to convert my noctilux to PL but it's way too fat unfortunately. (unless someone thinks it would work)
