Hi,

We're shooting an Indie Feature Film, and I'd like to Color Grade on my Apple 27" LCD Monitor after shooting Red 4K Raw Footage.

Is this okay i.e is my Monitor capable of displaying all the information contained in the Red Files? My understanding is that the Raw Footage is in LOG Format, and if I have a proper LUT for a particular Film Stock, I should be able to do Color Correction.

Is there more that I should be aware of? If so, where's a good place to read more about?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,
Lynx

There is no such thing as an Apple 27" LCD Monitor. They're either 23" or 30".

1. what is your online editing/ Finishing format: 4k dpx, 2k dpx, 1080p ?
4k dpx---- if you have the money go for it.

2k ---- some monitors from eizo
1080p--- hd decklink + 30" Apple HD Cinema Display

here are some infos about monitoring
http://silverado.cc/shop/product.php?productid=872&cat=107&page=1

dont forget...
you will need an AJA Kona 3 card and a very fast raid system.
red one records as RAW...you will develop it to whatever you need. tiff dpx etc.
and a Grading TOOl: SCRATCH, Iridias, DVS Clipster.
or you take the do it yourself route with aftereffects/Color...

damn...i am talking again about workflows...

Yeah I would like to try that on my 50" Apple monitor too.

How do you plan to calibrate your monitor and to what? Also why would you go from RAW to LOG? are you planning to filmout?

I meant a 23" monitor. Thanks for pointing that out.

We'd like to shoot 4K and eventually do a Filmout and record 4k dpx files to Kodak Neg. Stock.

Is there a place where I can read more about Workflows to do this... I want to understand what my choices are.

Speaking of Editing, could I do my edits on an Offline at say 1K and conform back to the 4K before Color Grading?

Also, Would the Lacie SATA II HardDrives be fast enough to do Color Grading on 4K?

Thanks in advance.

I think your best bet is figure out who's going to do your filmout and have them help you get set up to work with them.

You're going to have a really tough time getting the color correction right for film on your own. You may be able to do some good work matching shots and getting everything consistent.

They should also be able to help you with the offline/online workflow. You should do some color and workflow tests all the way through filmout before you begin to make sure you're not about to waste a ton of time.

As far as hard drives you might want to look into Sata Port Multipliers.

MarkusKloiber- Any idea what the QUATO costs in US $? Been looking for something like this for a while. Did see eCinema at NAB and they looked pretty good as well for LCD monitors.

Thanks!

I've been in touch with Quato, but they don't have a US distrib right now, they're thinking January '08. I believe the ip210me is going to run @ $5k, but I could be way wrong.

cheers,

You'd almost want to backwards-engineer it, take some 4K RGB 10-bit LOG shots of color charts and whatnot to a D.I. facility, color-correct them to the look you want, understanding that they are applying a LUT for their digital projection, then take them back to your home computer to figure out how to get close to that correction working from the original LOG files. But at best, you will only get in the ballpark and still probably need to do a pass at a D.I. facility to finish.

Considering you're still going to pay that $50,000, or whatever they charge you, to laser record your digital master of a feature to 35mm interneg stock, you might as well not waste that money by having a poorly-graded master, so plan on some additional color-correction at the facility before the film-out.

What you don't want to do is correct the project so that it looks correct for the linear (gamma encoded) color space of a monitor -- you need to keep the project in LOG space even when it has been color-corrected, which means applying a LUT for the monitor or somehow learning to color-correct LOG images without a LUT.

Wow. How do you apply a look up table to a monitor?

You apply it to the footage going to the monitor. Correcting LOG footage to look correct on a monitor is a pretty basic LUT - I believe it's part of REDCINE anyway. You just want to make sure you are just viewing the footage through a LUT as opposed to baking-in a conversion for broadcast video color space and color-correcting that conversion.

upload a 3d lut to a hdlink pro or a 1d to a hdlink
