Way back I read something about a "jr." version of Red being on the drawing board. Is there any new info about it?

Is it something like a compact 1080p cam in the $3500 price range?

Thanks for any info.

you are talking about the red mini, but i think red is working on the red one for the next couple of months. no features published.

At NAB back in April, RED spokesman Ted Schilowitz went on record that RED was working on a RED professional pocket camera. He emphasized the key words were "professional" and "pocket." All other questions were meet with, "Wait for further developments." So far as I know, they are still saying that.
If you want to speculate further (and who here doesn't), it may help to consider what the keywords above mean; "Professional" may mean that the output of this new camera will be of high enough quality to intercut well with the output of RED ONE. After all, the encore to RED ONE wouldn't satisfy very many if it didn't.
"Pocket" probably means that this new baby won't have interchangeable lenses or a Super35-sized sensor. Think of a mini Mysterium - still having up to 12 meagapixels, but in the 1/2" to 2/3" size range.
So, I'm thinking of a black-clad alumininum case (Ted said it wouldn't be plastic) with a fixed zoom lens and still using CF media and the whole thing fits in your pocket. Well ok, coat pocket.
Of course, this is all speculation on my part.

First time it should be presented on next NAB, and here are tons of threads on this theme, just full of speculations, wishes and recomendations so far. No more news from Jim and staff yet.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info

Thanks for all the responses and info!

Guess I will just have to wait for the next NAB.

any chance it might be a still camera?

Brandon that's a question you should ask Jarnnard.

I have been silently soaking up the wealth of intriguing information to be found in REDUSER Land for more time each day than is good for me, and this is the thread that has inspired my first transmission.

In the storytelling world I live in, smaller bodies are better and I have been waiting a long, long time for the highest quality high definition images to come from the tightest, most efficient mountable camera package.

Might the new day be dawning with the development of a RED MINI?

I am very interested, so I will dare ask the question.

Mr. Jannard, are you willing to answer any of these queries as to the potential production of a smaller version of the RED ONE? What might it's possible features be? What might it's projected timeline be?

p.s. Thank you all for your vision!

Hi Elizabeth,

If you don't mind me asking, what type of 'storytelling world' or work do you do that would greatly benefit from having a smaller camera, or make the Red One unsuitable?

Jeremy

Specialty mounts and radical angles.

Hi all,

some thoughts:

a red mini with smaller chips than in red one doesn't make sense. Why? Because you can't get the same DOF. So Red mini would be fishing in Sonys ex and new upcoming pana 250 (AVCHD full 4:2:2).
the only plus would be the codec and/or framerates.

So my suggestion of the red mini would be:

build a camera with the full sensor and limited features compared to red one, AND build a small smart device that attaches/detaches from the camera as small flashbased REDCODE RECORDER also sold seperately!!!!!!!!!

Why not!!! Development will take very little time (ALL the encoder parts are there, some software and connectors are easily to do from there) and throw it onto the market at a price around 2000USD. With HD component and single HD-SDI input it will be a MASSIVE seller, EVERY xdcamex owner will buy one, MANY other compression based systems will benefit (Xdcam, HDV, DVCPROHD etc.) AND YOU GET REDCODE IN PEOPLES COMPUTERS!!!! The same as Digidesign did back in the years! Spread the Software and you get people to buy your hardware too!! Not that RED isn't amazing products, but from a business perspective this would be my way to go!!!

And this will give you time to bring up future products that stunn us all as the red one does...

p.s.: i'll leave my adress here, if you RED people go with that idea and make a fortune, i'd like to get one recorder free... ;-)

cheers

This is an intriguing idea indeed!

Yeah,

something like the silicon mini, maybe a little better designed, so id would go as a "camera"..

anyways, i'll have to wait and see what NAB brings, for my dealer said if i irdereo a PMW-EX1 today i'd get it in march and the card reader in may...

seems that MANY people are getting a XDCAM EX...

cheers

This is true about the EX-1 buzz and it would really be a good little workhorse in many applications ... but it is still only 1080 on 1/2 chips.

I have to laugh :bleh: ... it seems like just yesterday that this resolution would have been very drool worthy. But RED has changed that now, haven't they?

This does sheds a different light on my internal purchasing debate ...
however an EX-1 in hand now (or in March) would get a lot of use before RED would release a RED MINI (sometime in '09 maybe) so really it is just a moot point for now.

Well, well,

to me a decent 1080p is enough for the next few years..
how many projects do you really deliver in 2k or higher??
my personal stuff goes out on DVD mostly, due to the fact that no
customer has a HD-DVD or Bly-Ray yet.

Yes, higher res is better, no question, but am i willing to spend 4 time the money on a red? Yes, if budget wasn't the question....

all the cinema commercials we did and still do so far are on 35mm, with a seperate cameraman and a decent lighting and CC-guy. Can i do these jobs in the near future? might be, but for this big might i don't need to spend on a 4k camera when my budget is limited...
and we will still do into mid next year, when we finally got our hands on test-reds from our preferred rental service...

a wonderful camera, the best you can get for the money...
do i need it? no.
do i want it? YES
would i want a 2/3inch Red mini? depends on the specs, but i think i'll go with sony for the next 3 years to come - way good enough for my projects...

just my thoughts

cheers
