We rented our camera #0031, and one other out to a production company (over a month ago) that shot all of the Promos for the New Snoop Dogg Reality show. I personally do not get much of a chance to watch TV, but tonight, I saw one of the promos we shot on E!

So if you want to see a RED acquired piece of content on Television, watch E!, and every time there is a Fatherhood promo, it was shot on #0031 & Singapore.

I believe it is the first piece shot on RED to be widely distributed, many many countries and US TV...

Wish I could share some of the footage with y'all, but it is not mine to distribute.

Enjoy.

UPDATE>>>Found it on Youtube...

good find...

i like your version better..

and yes it was variable frame rate...

2K @ 80 fps actually for 40% off all we shot, it was a new build the day before, but we let everyone know and went for it anyway...

if you watch thom's link, you will see some of the promos...there are many many more coming.

and here we are, catching it on youtube! sign o' the times, isn't it?:glare:

wish i could see a TV broadcast of RED footage, i would be most interested in seeing how it looks. if you find out any broadcast times for your work in advance, dino, could you post them? even ID'ing one of those toyota commercials would help....

toyota is regional, LA area, so i doubt you will ever see it in CO.

as for the snoop job; the show is being heavily promoted, and we did lots of them, so watch E! for an hour and you will probably see one or two of them.

An hour of watching E!, oh the brain cells, the poor innocent brain cells...:pinch:

TRUE! I tried last night, i lasted 15 minutes...wait for the playboy show, it is a little easier when there are playboy bunnies to look at.

I caught the spots last night right after I red the post on here (it was my gf not me, swear!)

I saw 2 different spots. One where snoop was walking the dogs, the other was this big feast type interior shot, a food fight breaks out.... it was cool to see RED footy on the ol TV.... it looked great, really clean, crazy shallow DOF.... very "RED" looking IMO.... muted colors, etc

of course my TV isnt the greatest either.

there are more on tv now

Yeah, great. The first broadcasted Red footage. It's clipped. It looks like video.

Slowly the disadvantages of a relative cheap camera arise: lots of incapable people have access to it and destroy it's reputation with spreading ugly footage all over the net.

Please, people. When you shoot and you want it to look like film make sure nothing clips. At least nothing the size of a dog.
Large area clipping=videolook.

There should be a auto-destroy-clipped-material function in the cam. There should be a loud air-siren alarm in the camera going off when something clips. The camera should explode and taking as much as inferior wannabees with it as possible.

due to circumstances beyond my control, the footage was downrezed to hdcam sr tape, "flat" without correction, and then downrezed again to digibeta to be ingested into a system 9 avid, then the edl was used to conform an online using the hdcam sr and then that was color corrected.

none of the advantages of shooting raw were enjoyed by the client, again due to circumstances which had nothing to do with RED, Kosmos or the camera.

if you want more information PM me and i can write a freakin book about what happened and all of which can be validated by TED, DEANAN,and the folks a plastercity.

this is why i wrote that long message which resulted in the creation of the HELP section.

that is all i will say in public about this, either way, it is still the first broadcast of RED footage, for better or worse.

as for hanks comments, clearly you are not aware of the facts surrounding the shoot and the post production fiasco, so before you go off on what individuals are capable of, be careful not to shoot the messenger.

as you will see in coming months, we have had tremendous success shooting with this camera, so much so that the new RED reel should contain several clips from projects shot with our camera.

the thought that, as a camera owner and someone whom rents the camera to professionals, we are somehow responsible for every image that gets shot and posted from the camera is not only impossible but defies the very logic of a collaborative medium. once the camera gets put on that dolly and is operated by a union DP with Union AC's for a Union Director, there is little that can be said and done by the camera owner to control the look not only in camera, but after the images are put through a post production process.

next we will be blamed for the poor ratings on the show.

what happened

what happened

In the interest of science, i have gone back to the r3d files, and they are blown out for this sequence, unfortunately i do not have the exact shots used in the aforementioned spot with the white dog. but i do have a few takes from the other camera (there were two on set), that was on a steadicam. the actual shot hank is referring to was shot with singapore a prototype camera.

first, check the e! website under the fatherhood show. there is a still image of the family around a table and the dog is clipped in that photo which was not shot on red, but with a very high end still camera, so there is inherent problems with a white dog in the context of a very dark skinned family.

second, the day that we shot was a very bright mid october day. it was 16:54 when that shot was recorded, the 10th consecutive hour of shooting (no lunch, no breaks for camera crew), and 10 minutes before the principle had to leave the set. i doubt the dp took out his meter, even though in that high altitude location the sun had gone very low on the horizon and obviously the f stop may have not been set properly, but then again sleep deprivation (see number 3) does funny things to judgement. (watch the documentary by a good friend of mine, "hands on a hard body" if you every doubt this.)

third, there was a 4 hour turnaround after a 16 hour day and an hour drive each way to and from the previous location to the next, me personally got 1.33 hours sleep, for the second night in a row. at that time after not really eating since 6am, i was spent, and a bit unset that we had never taken a break, as was the whole crew.

fourth, this was shot in 2k 80 fps, two days after the alpha firmware was released, build 7 (a). (subsequently this build was quickly replaced, therefore inherently unreliable) but director wanted to shoot 80 fps.

fifth, the camera was out for 33 days, moreover #0031, was just returned to me the day before, so "The World" was not as experienced then, as they are today or will be tomorrow with this camera. moreover, at the time i told the dp and director that i am an owner, not a DP or DIT, so they are on their own for setting color and exposure.

sixth, few if any people knew then like they know now, that over exposing is bad, unlike film.

other than that, i do not know what to say, i do not recall if there was an ND on the camera, and i was not by the camera when this was shot for a variety of reasons.

this all brings up an important point. what is the owners responsibility with regards to setting up each and every shot, do we override DP's that have 20 years experience because we put down $1,000 18 months ago?

of course knowing what i know now about the camera and the DR, i may have been more forceful, but then again, i was tired and a bit mad, so there is that too.

let your crew eat, let them get at least an 8 hour turnaround, including drive time...

I know that the DOP is not, as hank says, an "incapable... wannabe", check his site for yourself. http://ketildietrichson.com

lastly, with all due respect, posts i make after midnight are possibly completely ridiculous and may contain a bit of an attitude, i usually lighten up in the morning, but when someone attacks me or something that was shot on my camera, i tend to fight back right away and maybe even in a mean way, 40 years as a ice hockey player and coach makes me a bit of a tough guy, if only in my own head...

kosmos IMHO you may have personalized Hanks post and felt that it was an attack on you. I did not interpret his post that way. I do not feel he was blaming you for the poor video like images. It seemed like all he was pointing out that is that good camera does not = good images, so people need experience and proper knowledge of how to use the tools. It seemed to me that he put the blame on the inexperience of the camera team doing the shoot (primarily the DP).

ok, ill buy that. thanks for helping to give it perspective.

No problem, by the way even with all the choices you mentioned they made that limited the footage it still looks pretty damn good. I am sure you are very happy with your camera
