I just got back from the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA). I saw 12 films in three days, most were of the highest quality. My highlight was "Encounters at the End of the World" a brand new feature documentary directed by Werner Herzog. It is about a some of the people that are living in Antarctica, mostly scientists doing research, but odd and charming people. The photography was absolutely stunning, including some underwater footage. At least some and probably all of the above water footage seems to have been shot with a Sony Z1 (it can be seen in the reflection on a chrome item in a shot.

My guess is this film was mastered to a superior format and probably projected from an HDcam master (there were two brief glitches during the projection). I don't have any details about how it was made, but the image was gorgeous.

Some of my other recomendations include :
Bajo Juarez
Darfur Now
Divorce Albanian style
Operation Homecoming

Cheers,
Damien

Quite not sure because Herzog is ARRI guy for years but who knows???!!!

I do have Sony FX1 and it is an old horse for everything in HD!!!!!!

But I want RED in 4K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

January 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then I could compare it with HDV :) :) :) :) .

Ok, Apparently it was not all shot on HDV, here are a few pics where we see they're using a bigger cam than the Z1. The film is officially released on HDcam, so we can guess that's what it was shot on, definitly not film in any case.

Greetings Damien

Thanks for posting the link to this 'new' film. I'll have to try to find it............... hopefully it won't just be a Discovery channel release here in the US. I don't have a TV.

LOL: ".........beauty of HDV" Those two words shouldn't be used in the same sentance! :bleh:

I also find it VERY surprising to hear that the 'old master' would be using digital. ???

Regards

If you're at the right place at the right time, even a cheapy camera can get great shots.
