  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Andromeda/Hydra technology is being sold

Damn I have a friend that got me into that system. Reelstream does have a nice DVX/Andormedia 3D systems that looks cool. I was hoping for a HVX verson but now that RED is approaching maybe they sold it or went bankrupt?

Sorry to hear that but something tells me those guys won't be outta the game for long....

In my opinion... Red looks like it has much better image quality... e.g. lower noise (even with Redcode), higher resolution. (And lower noise is kind of the point of recording uncompressed. On the other hand, Redcode compression is very good and a lot more efficient than DV compression, which is designed for low-cost and real-time.)

Workflow-wise, Red looks stronger. The only major advantage I see for the Andromeda is price. But is that really worth the extra time (which equals money) and lower quality? I'm not trying to bash them here, but Red looks like they have a much stronger system.

Though Reelstream definitely deserves kudos for hitting the market first with a very interesting product.

2- For a really cool "mod" of the Andromeda mod, check this out:

Two Andromedized DVXs in a 3-D rig. Hopefully they find a good niche in the market... the price is too much for prosumers and indie filmmaking IMO (it's at least a few thousand/day; the rig rents with one of their company reps). For high-end work, they have some strong competition from f950, SI2K mini, Red, etc.

I don't believe anybody is comparing Andromeda (or Hydra) to RED, they are two different animals. RED is a complete camera solution while the Andro and Hydra mods are just "upgrade modifications". The thread is discusing the rumor of the Reel-Stream technology being sold (or not) not if it is superior to RED. One thing is for sure the Andromeda mod is far superior to the HVX200. I wish I knew this before I sold my DVX to buy an HVX. I hope the technology was bought (if rumor is true) by someone willing to continue the works!

Cheers,

Gualbert

With Cineform's announcement of plans for a portable HDMI recording solution, I wonder if there's a connection. Hm.
I wouldn't expect so, though I guess it all depends on what format you're recording to on the Cineform portable recorder. If it's one of the 4:2:2 codecs then, at least with the HVX, it seems silly to bother transcoding 4:2:2 DVCPRO HD to 4:2:2 Aspect HD or similar. But, if you can get the RAW sensor data into 4:4:4 Prospect 2K, well, that's definitely a nice option.

Is Cineform talking about providing the hardware?
