  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New 16 GB Cf on market...

Jim, have you considered shipping 4K and 2K option CF cards? The current 32GB CF cards hitting the market would be good enough for windowed 2K as would the 16GB's that have been around for a little while. If nothing else they'd be good for the B4 Lens mount market as they could shoot for an hour and 15 minutes of footage. I'm thinking lightweight setups for sports events etc.

Paul

Thats interesting. Even if Red wouldn't do that, are there cards out there now that would sustain enough to let you shoot 2k? Or does it not work like this?

Hmmm... No offense Paul, but I don't like that idea. :bleh:

I guess I don't want to continuously deal with "OK, these CF cards are good for 2K only, not 4K"... But then are the ones that are good for 4K @24fps the same ones required to shoot 2K @ 100fps? (assuming that becomes a usable format). It just seems like it would be more of a hassle to deal with this, especially if I'm chasing around employees who need to keep this stuff straight.

But I see your point. A couple of the current 16GB models out there and some of the upcoming 32GB ones could probably handle 2K. Or at least 2K @ 24fps... 2K @ 75+fps is approaching the same data rate needed for 4K, so it's still not a complete solution.

yes but until the cards that are good for both 4k and 2k come out maybe it would be sweet for red to have something on their website or maybe reduser, a list of cards available now that will perform well if you stick to just shooting 2k...?

I wonder if you could just "RAID" the flash chips in the CF cards to get higher write speeds (at the expense of higher power consumption). Maybe that's what Red is doing now.

Hey Paul, I've been thinking about the same thing for the past couple of days. One of my biggest clients only does TV spots. He was telling me 2K would meet his needs. Another one of my big clients does spots and commercial/industrial work. They also said 2K is all they could ever want. So, I have been wondering about some of the larger CF cards for the commercial/industrial jobs. Kinda moot right now. I don't have my camera yet and by the time it gets here, RED will have their bigger cards in the store.

BTW, wouldn't 2K scaled have the same date rate as 2K windowed? Also, any downside to having an inexpensive (slower) card to store backup software builds?

You are correct Jeff. The client would be tied into using a certain fps with the other cards. There are some cards out there that are just on the edge of being fast enough for 4K but not quite there, that should still allow you to shoot quite high fps at 2K. The PQI goes to about 22.5MB/s which would probably be about 60fps at 2K. Sorry you don't like it... I guess I can't please everyone :) :) :)

Yes there are other cards out there already available.
  • Sandisk 16Gb Extreme III (Available, Will not handle 4K)
  • RiDATA Lightning Series 233X CompactFlash 16GB (Available, Unlikely to handle 4K)
  • PQI Hi-Speed 300 CompactFlash 16GB (Available, Unlikely to handle 4K)
  • Transcend 133x Ultra Speed CF 16GB (Available, Will not handle 4K)
  • Pretec 16GB CF Card 333X (Available, Possibly handle 4K)
  • Hoodman Professional RAW 280x CompactFlash 16Gb (Out of stock, Possibly handle 4K)
  • Apacer Photo Steno IV CF 300X 16GB (To Be Released, Should be able to handle 4K)
  • Microdia 16Gb/32Gb 300x XTRA ELITE - (To Be Released, Should handle 4K)
  • Microdia 32Gb 160x XTRA PRO - (To Be Released, will not handle 4K)
BTW, wouldn't 2K scaled have the same date rate as 2K windowed?
Theoretically yes, I simply used windowed as an example because all of those shooting with the B4 mount and lenses. There is an existing market there for Red to tap into.

Paul

One other point of note is that if you are only wanting to shoot 30fps 2K then buying the 16GB cards that are fast enough for 4K may be about 5 x the price. Another reason for having the slower approved cards. For an example of current market prices the Hoodman Pro that I quoted above that could possibly handle 4K costs $1080 - Linky Even the Pretec listed by the OP is on sale from $999 to $499.

Paul

I wonder what would happen if we did a bulk buy? If all RED owners came together?
Will keep you posted Weirdcrew... Can't say much more than that for the time being and it's not fair to tred on Red's toes either. Are you on the UK Red mailing list?
