The Group Buy For Follow Focus and MB-20II matteboxes has gone through.
Check out the update in the off topic section.

Want to make sure no one misses this as a LOT of people asked me to keep them informed.

If the FF cost between $500-1500, it would make sense! Otherwise, it's absurd, IMHO. That's totally against my RED ONE religion. $4500-5000...lol... Ya gots ta be kidding! Thanks but no thanks :-)

Might be against your RED ONE notion of religion but ain't against Jim's....

Cheers,

David, with all due respect. I beg to strongly differ! Jim, just like all of us, up until lately had no other choice. But fortunately (and somewhat ironically) Jim has started a revolution and I for one I'm gonna see it through. Remember that one of the main reasons Jim took it upon himself to build this camera is because he wanted to give us broke ass cinema enthusiasts access to competitive gear at a reasonable price. I'll be damned if I continue to play the insensible overpaying game that Arri and them have us playing-and it's not gonna last for too long now. RedRock , CVB and Birger are just 3 of the soldiers that have joined this revolution and already have high quality matteboxes and lens mounts on the way, and they're every bit as good as the Arri. In fact the soon to be release RedRockMicro Mattebox is practically an exact replica of the Arri MB20 (your favorite), except that it's a little more elegant, more 21st century.

So let me see, this is one hell of a conundrum: $4000-5000 for the Arri or $500-1000 for the Micromattebox which happens to be of the same quality and build(no plastic) hmmm...?
Let me see: should I buy a RED One or Arriflex for %90 more money...hmm?
it's a tough decision...

As you're talking about matte boxes (FF is similiar) now, sometimes it's more than just how cheap something is.
Read here.

Also, tell me when Red will provide me with 50% of the Arri MB-20 parts shown here

Cheers,

I kinda understand you David. I guess your plans involve renting out your gear a lot, and that means staying with the overprice conspiracy... totally pragmatic, especially since it'll be a while 'til the jig is up for Arri and them(...if you get my drift) However, those of us who are buying almost exclusively for our own use don't worry about brand names, or "maturity of product" when we can clearly see that the product is built from the same materials and features of the "mature" one. As to the "honda" comment, going with that line of logic, I guess that to you think the RED One is a Honda('cause it so cheap, my god!!!) and the Arri 435 is a Porsche. Heck, if you had the money, you'd buy an Arri instead, right?

couple of things,

Like I said with quality....'saying stuff is one thing...actually is, is another!'

I appreciate getting a $5K Arri MB for you is a waste.

Cheers,

The price difference of an Arri film camera (if you consider what a film camera involves) is pretty fair compared with what Red is asking for the Red One. A film camera needs a very strong and accurate movement, rock steady film transport in mm precision, a rotating mirror shutter, a superb bright viewfinder that, if it was so easy and cheap to build, all the digital cameras would have included it a long time ago since everyone is asking for them. And, as a result of that (35mm system) you get the best image quality available.

I understand some people being upset with Arri for their price policy on their accesories but they are the ones doing the design, not copying them like the chinese. But rest sure you get rock solid products that are going to last for decades and going to work smoothly with your equipment. Being an owner of both film and digital cameras, let me explain that for business film has been a far better choice. Digital cameras last 5 years and then they get obsolete. And they used to cost almost the same than a film one. A properly serviced, one decade old 435ES keeps getting the best image available in 35mm and running up to 150fps. A decade old Moviecam SL still is the best camera in the world to rest on your shoulder for sync sound. The Red soldier speech and the anti Arri behavior is something I found a little bit annoying. I´m an Arri owner of both camera and lenses. They are products I´m very happy with and worked out perfect through the years. Red still have to walk this road and this is a pretty long road filled with obstacles like endurance, obsolecense, upgradabilty, image quality, etc.

I for one hope that I'm in the first 50 for the RedRock Micro Matte box. Quality looks good enough for me.

Whoa there cowboy. Take off the blinders for just a minute. Why knock Arri, when they produce superior products? You think redrock's stuff is the exact same as others? what about their mini35 adaptor, the redrock micro or whatever it is called? you think it is the same as the more expensive movietube?

i totally get that for YOU, arri products make no sense. for others, certain arri products make all the sense in the world. why? because we want our customers to come back. yours may not care that you are out with redrock products. mine will demand arri on certain items, overpriced or not. do you think that the RED lenses are the same, performance wise, as the Cooke S4 series as well, and that Cooke is nothing more than a brand name ripping us dummies off?

don't be fooled into thinking that every redrock-type out there is suddenly accomplishing what RED has with their camera. it ain't that easy, and there will be a lot of claims made. careful research usually uncovers the truth however (see redrock 35mm adapter).

RED is the real deal. Not all are.

....I guess your plans involve renting out ..... However, those of us who are buying almost exclusively for our own use don't worry about brand names, or "maturity of product" ......?

Here we are, that's the point.

When you need functionality, functionality and functionality under any condition (you rent) you simply can't afford anything else than Arri ( I'm talking of MB).

When I'm about to by something just for myself, I can easily scope with cheaper copy... and maybe have bit more work with it.

I definitely have to disagree with this. First off let me say I have a bunch of Redrock Micro systems and they are fantastic for the price. They have allowed us to shoot some beautiful flicks for very cheap. However, I have had the wheel on the Redrock Micro FF just break off while pulling focus on TWO of the Redrock FFs I own. It wasn't a huge deal because the projects were small and low budget. If we had been using a Redrock FF on this Ford commercial and the wheel snapped off it would have been a disaster. A production like that loses a ton of money every minute they aren't shooting. The extra price of a Chrosziel or ARRI FF in this situation is a no brainer. You would have to run over an ARRI with a semi truck before it will break.

Pay to play

Pay to play

The Redrock stuff requires TLC which is unrealistic for rental or heavy production use. I have a lot of faith in Curt but as one of the early owners I needed an immediate solution. The Arri MB20Mk2 is an excellent piece of gear and commands respect on any set.

The RedOne is shaking up the biz and by using industry standard accessories like Arri kit you quell some concerns. When professional people have their reputations and even their jobs on the line they want bulletproof, period.

Amen. Thread closed. If this isn't important to you, then the redrock stuff is fine. If it is, go with Arri.

The purpose of this thread was just to let people know ARRI had come back with a deal.. I wanted to make sure everyone knew about it..

I was not expecting this discussion.. But it's a good one

I myself have to go with ARRI.. There are no internal filter wheels... The only thing protecting my image will be my filters.. Can't skimp here..

Different budgets for different people. Commercial or any paid work is very demanding and exacting. When clients put their money and jobs on the line, the last thing anyone needs is equipment failure.

Let's not berate others for what we cannot afford. At the end of the day mortgages and car notes have to be paid. Use the tool that get's YOUR job done and leave the next man alone.
