  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon Focus Ring

Regista

I wanted to mention a couple things about the Redrock lens gears. First, when you put the gears on, you don't need a calibrate any set screws like you do with those rings. We originally had the set screw design and felt this approach had a number of significant disadvantages: it took to much effort to set up and calibrate to make sure the screws correctly centered the lens, and also a significant concern that set screws scratch the housing and place pressure points on the housing, causiong it to bend which can cause grease to push out and the housing to bind up over time which ultimately ruins the lens.

Second, the Redrock lens gears are wider so you can use externally focusing lens (ones in which the lens focus ring moves in or out when focusing) with up to 1" of travel. That's roughly up to 180mm lens if it is externally focusing.

Finally, our lens gears are made of a self-lubricating ABS plastic (which I realize may put it in the category of things that sound dirty but aren't :) ) designed to make the smoothest gear mesh possible for no vibrations, etc. without using grease.

You can check them out on our web site. they are three for $150 and cover an amazingly wide range of lens sizes.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Brian, at risk of sounding like the frikkin' RedRock fan club, I must add that the wider gears definitely do help - if you have a lens whose focus ring moves forward and backward as some Nikons do, you are totally screwed without wide gears.

I should add a disclaimer that I haven't actually bought anything from Redrock, only rented every now and then.

Brian, I have a question - if I wanted to use your Redrock gears with an Arri LFF-1, would they work? Am I crazy?

The Redrock gears are standard 0.8 film pitch so yep

Cool. I think that the RedRock follow focus would be fine for non-DPs like me, but most of the people I work with would go crazy with the "wrong way round" focusing direction of the Nikons. But if I mount your setup to an LFF-1 (which I can mount reversed) then I can get right-way-round focusing if I am on a bigger shoot working with a pro focus puller.

Your answer to fixing the focusing direction is your upcoming remote follow focus, right? Any hints on how it will compare to the Bartech, for instance? I know the Bartech is more expensive...
