  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best brand for ND filters: Tiffen, Formatt or Schneider?

After all the good gems in this thread, this should be a sticky by now!

B&H doesn't stock ANY 1.2s, of any brand, they are all special order. And then 1.5 and 1.8 are non-existant on B&H. I called up filmtools and they had 1.2 in Schneider only and could special order a 1.5

Why is RED not making these filters? From a man who made a small empire out of top quality optics and some of the best sunglasses money can buy.. It does not seem that big of a stretch to me.

I ordered ND 1.2, 0.6 and Circular Polariser direct from Formatt Web Store and got them in about a week.

Linear polarizing filters seem to have a greater effect on the final image than circular polarizers do,
and in spite of many misconceptions, you can use either type of filter on any camera.
But there is a catch: if you use a linear polarizer on a modern camera,
you may not be able to use your built-in metering, or autofocus, or possibly both.

I would recomend buying a 138mm round pola over the 4x4 or any other rectangular or square pola. The round is just a lot easier to set the effect you want without worry of vinetteing or the matte box not allowing the filter to spin enough.

Anyone know who sells the darker 1.5 and up glass? I can't find them on BH or FilmTools.

I got Formatt to custom make some ND's for me. One was a 2.1ND and if memory serves me well we were also discussing going as dark as 3ND'ish, but I chose 2.1ND for long exposures during timelapse.

How would I attach a 138mm round pola to the Red zoom?

Most matte boxes have bellows (retainer ring) that are round and allow a round pola (usually 138mm) to be placed in them. Then you can spin the pola until you find the spot you want it placed for the effect you are looking for. The bellows sits in front of the regular filter trays, when I say in front I mean the closest to the lens part of the matte box.

Hope I made sense with that. I can not figure a way to say it differently.

I'm not positive, but I think Shawn was asking about mounting directly to the lens. Elsewise what you said makes perfect sense to me. lol

Ya Chuck but mounting directly to the lens typically means to me that you have to screw it in till it is tight which does not allow you to spin or set the pola. Pretty much for me any pola other then a round one that you screw into a retainer ring that can be spun till you set it are self defeating. I would not buy anything but a round one that fits your matte box and for people that don't have a matte box with a retainer ring yet don't be bothered buying a pola till you do.
