  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Straight from Red!

what if I told you it was already in the camera, all you had to do was connect a usb cable between 2 cameras with build 17/18 or above?

Cameras record at the same time with the same shutter.

"would you like to know more?"

F@*K YES!

(This could make things very easy indeed, I like easy)

Master / Slave

Master / Slave

From a (future version of) Operations Guide.

USB-2 Master.

This port permits the camera to operate as the Master camera in a Master / Slave camera pair.

To establish control, plug the square end of a USB-2 cable into the lower USB port of the RED ONE camera to act as a Slave, and the rectangular end of a USB-2 cable into the upper USB port of the RED ONE camera to act as the Master. Then power cycle both cameras. On boot up the two cameras will automatically establish Master / Slave mode.

Once connected using the USB cable, User Interface commands and remote triggers received by the Master camera are transmitted to the Slave camera.

This is a preliminary implementation, but supported commands include -

PROJECT:
TIME BASE
QUALITY
RESOLUTION

SENSOR:
ISO (SENSITIVITY)
COLOR TEMP
SHUTTER MODE
SHUTTER SPEED
SHUTTER SYNCRO
SHUTTER PHASE

TRANSPORT:
RECORD
GPI RECORD TRIGGER
PRE-RECORD
PLAY
FAST FORWARD
FAST REVERSE
NEXT CLIP
PREV CLIP
EXIT

The functionality seems much better than what one could really hope for. This will eliminate many headaches uncertainties difficulties and worries with S-3d. Beyond perfect! Can’t wait to give it whirl!
Stuart thanks for posting the specs/info on this,

Stuart, Can you disconnect the cameras and will the slave keep the settings? Obviously, they would have to be connected if changes are made. Can they then be reconnected and more changes made or would a power cycle be needed?

Thanks for the awesome addition!

Thanks Much,
Rich

Is this a good solution for 2 camera shoots, as well? Any downside? If I'm reading correctly, the cameras would start at the same time and have exact matching timecode. Is this right?

Thanks!

Kevin

Timecode would probably still need lockit boxes or similar, but start of picture on each camera will be synched. But I could be wrong, as this has been a "hidden feature".

Correct.

You feed each camera timecode and genlock signals as normal, but by being in Master / Slave mode, operation of the two cameras is locked.

This is amazing! I had no idea. How could you keep secrets from me?

Hi Stuart

Something I've been meaning to look up/work out, but maybe you know off the top of your head (yes I'm being lazy!).

Timecode into a camera or other equipment uniquely identifies a video frame, but doesn't in itself synchronise anything.

Genlock (B& B Black & Burst or Tri-level Synch) synchronises two or more pieces of equipment, so they are within a certain small window of timing, but there is still a bit of "wiggle room" in exact start of picture because of that "window".

This USB synch provides for an exactly synchronised shutter/start of frame with no, or very little, wiggle room.

Would that be a correct summary?

If so, in theory, could we use the USB synch instead of a genlock? I own an older Lock-it box which outputs timecode and B&B, but not Tri-level as required by RED. Rather than buy a newer expensive Lock-it, was wondering if I could bodge a B&B to USB synch somehow. Just wondering out loud - gut feeling it's a nonstarter.

I would guess it would matter what you required for critical sync. If with this USB way of syncing the cameras start/stop you could sync picture later via a multicam by in point seing as though they would both have the same start/stop frame. For audio sync, you could just use the old school method of a "slate" (I know crazy concept) to keep the audio in sync if for example you only had one timecode cable to one camera or one lockit box.
I think this feature is awesome! Can't wait to pull this rabbit out of my hat on the next multicam shoot. Will this work for more than two cameras at a time or is it limited to two?

Just two at the moment.

Probably not thinking this though but could you use a wireless usb extender between the two cameras?
