Hi. Total newb to red (anything) on a project that begins this week. I've read so much in the last 2 days my head might have already exploded. I read a helpful article linked on this site re: getting off the 4k footage asap, which sounds good to me & read the whitepaper for red & fcs but I'd love some suggestions on workflow, particularly when to use redcine & suggestions for export to bring in to fcp.

Clips are various, 4k & 2k
5-6 minute feature
Editing on FCP
Outputting to SD (DVD)

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi David. What do you mean by "getting off the 4k"? Do you mean getting away from the 4k neg and getting something smaller and more managable, or do you mean how to most quickly get access to the 4k material in a format like DPX or tiff sequence?

While we wait for that answer, however, I'll tell you that the only use I've found for RED CINE is loading all the days clips into it so that I can watch dailies, and play with possible one light corrections, in a simple clean way. You're supposed to be able to scale/crop, apply your one light and then output to various other formats like quicktimes, but I've never been able to get it to work. I also don't recall if RED CINE supports audio.

Hi Brandon. Thanks for the quick follow-up.

Sorry, I do mean getting a smaller and more manageable file. The director is a bit paranoid letting anyone see the RAW files--it's this ad agency's first RED project--and would like a one light correction before anyone sees any of the clips. Redcine is supposed to have the ability to combine audio with the quicktime. That you've not been able get Redcine to convert clips to quicktime is not very encouraging for me, sadly.

David,

What post shop is the agency going to work with?

by all mean, do an experiment and try out RED CINE. Load a couple clips, scale to 1080, do a one light, and render them out as quicktimes. The software if very easy to use and should only take about an hour for the whole process as long as you use small clips.

For me it hasn't worked though. So I open each clip in RED ALERT individually, do my one light, and then quit RED ALERT and open RED RUSHES. I load all the r3ds i want to transcode, make sure I have the look set to RSX instead of camera, and render from there. Never had an issue with that.

When I edit my own stuff, I just edit with the proxies in FCP, but usually other people just want something they're used to, so that's when I transcode using RED RUSHES.

Hope that helps.
