Hard Drives

[Gavin Greenwalt]

A few news items over at Toms Hardware I thought I might share:

New 750 GB Western Digital Drive (~75MBs Read/Write):

... going for about $200 on New Egg:

Tell me; I can use those hard drives whit in my red one camera or I only can use the red one hard drives?

[Simon Blackledge]

Are they good for raids though?? I thought you needed enterprise drives for raids with larger heads and quicker failure alarms or something ? :-/

There is no such thing as an enterprise drive. IMO it's a bunch of marketing bajingo. Failure rates are identical. The only difference you might find in an enterprise drive is a smaller form factor or something like a 15k speed drive.

btw the "(~75MBs Read/Write)" is a benchmark. In real world I wouldn't ever expect to see that level of performance. Real-world is probably closer to ~40 if you're lucky.

Those of you lucky enough to live near a Fry's Electronics, this hard drive is only $179.99 until this Tuesday. Oh and RAID builders take note, there's no limit of 1 per customer.

We just bought four of these drives, and we'll be sticking them in an external SATA port multiplier enclosure. I'll probably post about it on Indie4K later this week.

(We should finally have a new podcast up as well.)
