I am trying to determine if I will need to deal with any pulldown issues working with 29.97 fps RED footage. In other words, is RED footage shot in 29.97 a true 29.97 fps format, or is it being created from a 23.98 format with pulldown in camera, like some other digital cameras do?

If it's working with pulldown, is it advanced pulldown or basic 3:2?

Having read the camera manual, the only mention of this is in the monitor out of the camera, which adds pulldown on "certain frame rates" in order to display a 720 HD 59.94 signal on an outboard monitor. It does not clarify what format the camera actually records, with or without pulldown.

Many thanks in advance!

Are you talking about shooting in 23.976 and then monitor it and edit at 29.97?

If you shoot in 29.97 there's no pulldown scheme involved.

If you shoot in 23.976, then monitoring it from the camera during shoot would be in 720/59.94. RED ONE's 23.976 is the native 23.976 instead of with pulldown on 29.97 format. So, in FCP, you would edit in 23.976p. In case you have to put it in 1080/60i then you can add pulldown in FCP or through the video hardware.

can someone explain as simply as possible what pulldown is, and at what stage in the process it is used?

Pulldown is created because to fit 23.976 format into 29.97 based recording format. DV is normally 29.97 based but to use it for cinema purpose which needs 24 frame (23.976 to be exact on video), they had to add pulldown frames to fill up the difference (24 frame against 30, you have to fill 6 frames).

In RED's 23.976, it is native like the native P2 23.976, so you don't have to use pulldown unless you have to finally master your 23.976 project into 29.97 for broadcast purpose.

That clarifies it for me, I needed to know if you shoot in 29.97 if there was pulldown in the file, the manual was not clear on that. I knew it added it for monitoring purposes. Appreciate the feedback, thanks Kaku.
