  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What camera and editing suite will you be upgrading/changing from by going red?

So let's hear it, I think it will be interesting to see who's making the big jump like in my case (DVX100A & FCP Studio 5) or who might actually be downgrading because of the cost (hard to imagine red being a downgrade of any kind but I'm sure atleast one person will think so).:matrix:

So after my first thread I'm going for something a little more safe. I'm also curious after getting my head bit off by a lot of people who made it sound like buying a red was a lateral migration for them financially. For camera gear, I'll be migrating from the Panasonic HVX-200 and HDX-900, but i will keep the HDX-900 as a B-roll camera and for certain applications where I want the video look, and the HVX-200 will primarily be used for budget conscious clients.

As for an editing suite, I will be migrating to Final Cut Studio 2 as my primary editing suite, and I will have the new Adobe Master collection as well - If I need a new version of photoshop, illustrator, and after effects, I might as well buy the whole shebang, and have it at the ready for clients who want it. It is also the point where I am leaving AVID behind for good - they can no longer be justified on a price/performance basis, or any basis for that matter. They think they're the king of the heap, they've run out of innovative steam, and everyone has caught up to or surpassed them, and they haven't lowered their prices. Even Pro Tools has languished since being bought out by Avid. Apple on the other hand has attacked them on every front, and now offers a complete editing and finishing solution from start to finish with Color and Final Cut server. And now with Apple and Red being in a very close relationship, it can only serve to further the aims of both companies. Apple is now closing in on the high end post-production market, and the next release of Final Cut Studio will only take the battle to the next level if it is as much of a leap forward as Final Cut Studio 2 was from its predecessor.

Wow. Interesting. You're leaving Avid behind. Now that's exactly what Apple was hoping for.

We normally rent cameras & glass as required by the job but do have some SD equipment (DVX, SD) that we may or may not retain.

As for our edit bays, we use the Adobe range (Premiere, Audition, Encore, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, Page Maker, Acrobat) and will be going to the new Creative Suite 3 as soon as it is released.

So you guys have rented normally but now you're buying Red. This is truly going to change a lot of things.

I agree, the economics usually dictates that ownership can't be justified based upon the usage versus the acquisition cost. The RED One is a different situation, owning the camera and accessories is economically viable, but I expect that we will still rent glass based upon the requirements of the specific project.

Yeah the lenses will ahve to wait obviously. What do you think of Red's offerings for glass?

The prime set seems to be a great offering, I am really interested to see how fast they are once released. The 300mm is a bit long for most applications and not something that I could likely justify purchasing. The 18mm - 50mm is also very interesting and may be something we will consider.

I expect that I will shoot in booth full frame and windowed modes and would likely use fast S16 primes when shooting in the windowed mode. There are so many different lens choices that renting is really the best way to go for the types of projects that I work on. There are some great rental houses in the LA market which allow one access to glass that you might never be able to justify purchasing.

We'll be moving from VariCams to Red.

Dropped Avid for Final Cut several years ago and have never regretted the decision.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

When I picked a few years back on which editing software I would take classes for I went with Final Cut and I have to say I don't know Avid that well but I'm extremely happy with my choice considering Red has bonded to Apple. This really feels like a new beginning is starting. Very exciting!

Many will simply go to Final Cut just to avoid having to transcode from one format to the next which is time consuming for both the editor, and in terms of computing resources.

for paid commercial work - they rent film camera's - if RED is the best camera for the job then they will rent a RED from rental house ...

for my personal projects - been renting/borrowing 16mm & S8mm camera's = these projects will move to RED ..

for holiday/family - just got a HV20 ...

for documentary's - will move to RED ...

Post: i'm not a editor ... just looking for basic off line editing on PC, currently not planning to move to FCP .... for my projects will either pay for online or hire editor that could finish 2k/HD ...

Again, any NLE which does support Quick Time codec will edit REDCODE RAW straight out of the camera. No need to transcode and no need of FCSP2. For sure there is some adventage of working with FCSP2 with RED footage, but not the one you are talking about.

Speed shouldn't be a problem as REDCODE RAW 4k is only about 25MB/sec. The reason you would like to transcode is for a offline edit, when for expemple you have a total of 4TB of footage and don't have such a RAID array at your edit suite. And obviously for all NLE that doesn't support Quick Time.

I'm not only keeping AVID, I'm updating From Xpress Pro HD to Avid Media Composer 'cause I still don't see moving to FCP as a real advantage.

Avid is making me spitting mad. I wish they would get in the game. I have had Media Composer, but just bought FCS2 because I won't wait for Avid. They are going to get smart or shrink away.

The nice thing about this situation is that although I'm sticking with Avid, I think I'll purchase FCP 'cause it's so affordable, so it don't hurt to have it and see how I fare with it.

I've had both Avid and FCP to jump between. Since I started on an Avid, it was faster for me and the color correction was better. However, for graphics I went to Apple's Live Type and now it will be Motion. And for DVD authoring DVD studio Pro was the only way to go. Now, that Apple has everything integrated with surround sound and mixing, graphics, effects, and soon to be Blu-Ray Authoring (hurry up please!! or I'll be using Adobe on my mac), it's time to say goodbye to Avid - whose production suit is all piece meal from other software companies. By the way, FCP now has doulbe the registered users than AViD and will break 1 million by the end of the year.

Oh, I have a small camera upgrade from my Sony PD-150 DVCAM to RED.

I'm another who is upgrading from the DVX100 to Red. I am using Adobe Production Studio Premium and I already have CS3 on order (I think it is the 12th that they will start shipping out the boxes)

I'm waiting to see how my 2 GHZ Core 2 Duo laptop handles the load before I look into a replacement... those new Apple MacBook Pros with the 1920x1200 LCDs are lookin' good.

I'm a freelance dp so I use whatever I get forced to but mainly 35mm. I've shot a bit of varicam too so hopefully both of these will go Red if I have anything to do with it.

As a director (music videos currently, more to come) I post myself using FCP AutoDuck and After Effects from Varicam footage. I'm VERY happy to say goodbye to the varicam in this case as I am just sick of keying it but have enjoyed the digital workflow. Now for more pixels!

As a DoP, others are usually editing the projects I work on. For my own little projects, I am PC-based and am quite happy with Sony Vegas. It'll give me a quiet thrill, actually, to use Sony's product to cut RED One footage. ;-)
