Hi there
I just got my first RED ONE camera, and the very first thing I noticed is a heavy strobing effect that makes the shots look horible !. I`ve been reading a lot of this stuff all over the net. Some say it`s normal, that this is what you get in 24p recording, that this gives it more of a film-look, that it is about panning speed vs focal lenght, that it has to do with shutter speed, and some other reasons that circle around but in the end, I find no solution at all. I`ve tried all possible combinations of shutter speed, panning speed, focal length, resolution, etc. It looks bad on the monitor when shooting, but it looks bad as well on my MAC. Please tell me there is s solution for this stuff. It´really getting me crazy !

Thanks a lot
Alan

If you are not used to shooting 24p it could look odd, but Red is just like any other 24P capture format, be it film, Varicam or Cine Alta.

Cheers,

Nick

Thanks guys
It turns out that the movie looks a lot better after rendering / exporting form final cut (using pro res 422 hq compressor) than when monitoring during shooting and watching the proxys directly on QT Player. The flickering, even though doesn´t dissapear, is reduced considerably. Why is that_?
Thanks a lot again

Probably frame rate performance an undebayered footage.

I've learned not to question the look or performance of footage until it has been properly processed.

Panning - great plans are usually really slow and can be hard to pull off if you're not used to higher end heads/cameras.

What head are you using? If O'Connor, what are your pan/tilt settings?

As stated, the "strobing" is limited to monitoring...

With the EVF, try "open gate". Not sure its good with 24P, but with 25P I get rid of flicker with it.
What shutter speed did use use? If you use higher shutter speeds you can get this flickering sharp look, seeing every single frame without motion blur.

I haven´t received neither the EVF nor the ProLCD yet, so I´m using an extenal HD Monitor. The tripod is Sachtler, and yes, I´ve followed the ASC guidelines for panning speeds. I´ve tried several shutter speeds, shutter angles, frame rates, etc, and the flickering is always there. It´s just worse or better, but always there. I´ve read the Open Gate stuff, but as I understand, it just tricks your eyes when monitoring since it doubles de frame rate during playback.
BTW, the strobing appears not only in the monitor, but also in the MAC, right there in the proxys....
Anyhow, as I said before, it appears that it can be controlled in post. I just don´t understand how.
Does everybody see the same flickering in every panning ?

Strobing when panning !!!

Strobing when panning !!!

Hi there
Apparently, when shooting 24p, you have lo live with heavy strobing effects. I`m not convinced at all that what I´m getting is normal. I´ve seen the footage of other 24p cameras, and the results is anything like this. It looks really ugly
Is there any key to remove it, besides controlling the shutter speed, the panning speed (ASC guidelines), the frame rate; avoid vertical lines, high contrast edges, etc. I´ve tested it all, and the strobing is always there!
It´s getting me crazy !
Is there any treatment you can apply in post to remove it ?. I´ve read about some deconvolution process, but don´t know if it is implemented in FCP. The weird thing is, the flickering is there in the monitor during shooting, but is also in my MAC, right there in the proxys. However, I´ve made some tests, and, even though it doesn´t dissapear, is reduced considerably after rendering / exporting it within FCP. Don´t understand why.
Thanks for your help

What kind of flickering do you see? Can you post an example clip?

It's the beauty and the limitation of 24 fps.

Exactly what Jay said.
Slower or faster "that" critical speed.
You'll see exactly the same strobing effect in cinema at that critical speed.
Can be even worse if your shutter speed is fast.

But If it has improved after rendering in FCP, maybe what you saw before was too much juddering du to disk slow speed and/or real time CPU conversion "choking".

Render out a quicktime, to some format your computer can play realtime. The quicktime proxies can stobe if you have a slow computer.

can you post a short example of what your getting. Also how are you viewing the footage and how did you shoot it?

Was it crazy handheld whip pans with 1/500 shutter or a slow steady pan at 1/24 shutter?

How are you viewing the footage? FCP, Quicktime, Premiere, LCD, studio monitor, HDTV?

You need to provide way more info.

Mahalo,
Dusty

what are your system specs? Have you viewed red footage before shot with the camera? was the strobing apparent for you then?
I'm guessing it's a combination of a little or all of the above. An underpowered system will play back your footage with stutter, shooting at any shutter speed other than 180degrees will cause a different kind of frame blur that you might not be accustomed to seeing.
Try rendering out a very low resolution quicktime 480x240 and see if the strobing is still apprarent to you.

Daylight or 50/60Hz lights?

Daylight or 50/60Hz lights?

Hi there
Apparently, when shooting 24p, you have lo live with heavy strobing effects.

What kind of light are you using?

Even if you set the shutter to 172.8/144 degrees under AC lights you will get strobing if the camera or subject move. The 172.8/144 trick only works fully on static subjects.

This has already been highly addressed here on the forums. Do a search to find an answer/solution.
