To date:

record or preview

DUAL LINK HD-SDI - always clean output, and it only shows the active recording area with embedded audio and time code. There are 2 options.
a)dual link 4:4:4 RGB 1080p, monitoring or
b)2 duplicate outputs 4:2:2 , 720p or 1080p/i

HDMI - shows recording area and look around, 720p

HD-SDI - shows recording area and look around, 720p

1. What have you guys decided on the degree of "user selection" (ex. various info that the EVF/LCD gets) for this ?

EVF - DVI shows everything, has fully programmable user selected frame guides, 720p

LCD -DVI shows everything, has fully programmable selectable frame guides, 720p

2. I assume that since it is integrated with the camera that these outputs are proprietary. Is this correct ? Which would mean you can't use 3rd party LCD's, EVF's (if you want to see everything).

3. Is the HDMI still 720p only? I thought they shared a physical connection.

Just a few questions that I'm still wondering about.

If you are you asking if the Red LCD is 720?...... it's not, the RED LCD is WSVGA = 1024x600.

That's most of the questions answered :wink: Not to be rabbitting on about it, but it doesn't address question #1 and 4. For me, I'd like to know what is user selectable because I want to know if I can choose other options for the 1st AC (LCD) or even video village choices (modular of course). Depending on what is user selectable; it will determine a wee bit, IMHO. The RED EVF and to a lesser extent the LCD are really great deals. Most likely i'll be choosing them, but when customizing, it pays to be a curious cat.
The length of the cable that comes with the EVF/LCD will also determine production options (the 3ft and 10ft may be purchased)... A pro DP has been more than patient in answering my various questions, and I'd like to have all the info. before I bother him again, before customizing my baby.

I know these guys are really busy for NAB and are running on REDbull, pizza and enthusiasm. Consider me stoked; however, I'm still curious about the possibilities.

The known choices are all in the thread Phil mentioned. They haven't disclosed more than this:

CAMERA LIVE OUTPUTS

- EVF = 720p video with look around, frame markers and other graphics
- RED LCD = 600p video with look around, frame markers and other graphics
- HDMI = 720p video plus audio without graphics
- HD-SDI x single = 720p video plus audio without graphics
- HD-SDI x dual = 1080p clean signal

I'd certainly like to know the format of EVF 720p.

...meaning if the EVF 720p was an 'open' standard,they might make additional EVF sales for other digitial cameras.

...also if you could place a DVI splitter on the EVF output you could run other external monitors showing look around, frame markers and other graphics but I'd be very surprised if RED hasn't already considered this and if compliant with their RED strategy and obviously internal video signalling, would have it as a menu option for the HDMI output.

Thinking of that meself, I was. If RED's EVF is as good or better than the acccuscene they could make it a profit center. My conjecture is that the functionality (processing/output/input) is split between the camera and the EVF, making it unlikely to be sold outside of the camera (which is another reason they could keep it at such a low comparitive price point). This is the same paradigm with which they achieved 4K in camera -> making it a digital negative instead of a huge RGB file.

I think it's a smart strategy because besides the utility, quality, control, you also achieve the ability to upgrade with both firmware and software. All you have to be concerned with updates is the advancement of the native architecture and not the reinvention from the ground up or wide market realities. Albeit, all of that is predicated on the intentions of the corporation - either you end up with innovation or a company protecting it's beach head through oligopolistic policies...

I guess the unanswered questions will have to wait. I don't mind, but as i stated before, i'm a curious cat.

RED = over $50,000, 2K, vapourware. That was 2006. RED = $18+, 4K, working cameras. That's 2007. I always believed we were onto something special. Hopefully, NAB proves to be the Triple Crown win. It's been a thrill to be a small part of the development...

Also, bear in mind that you are effectively asking questions about the software and as we know the early res numbers will be shipped with incomplete code. Still a working camera, but not all functions implemented. The RED team reckon to finish the S/W in the middle of the year. But in my experience S/W always slips to the right!!

And personally I'd go with the 10 foot cable because you never know when you might elect to use a crane.

Outside of that, if you are not going to NAB I can ask specific questions for you and let you know when I get back.

Hi, Phil. I looked through that thread 3 times and didn't see a confirmation by the RED team on the HD-SDI/HDMI "user selection" beyond the look around area. ? Maybe I need a refresher in internet reading...haha... In any event, I don't expect any more specifics until NAB, and I'm ok with that.:biggrin:

Could be. I thought that was just the RGB processing, but who knows. They're certainly doing all they can to deliver as much requests as possible in the shortest time frame with "tank-like" reliability, so it's a tall order, and they deserve some room. So far, they've overdelivered, giving us a Porsche 911 Turbo (4K) instead of the Porsche boxster (2K) for nearly the same price.

And personally I'd go with the 10 foot cable because you never know when you might elect to use a crane.

Yeah, I'll probably pick one up, but if I can combine some wireless capability with focus etc... and there's a couple other specialized rigs I'm thinking about (speed boat racing etc...) then the cable may be lettuce I can save :wink:

No I think that was a bum steer - sorry.

This was what I connected with from Stuart:

The RED-EVF and RED-LCD are close cousins. They are driven by a common output from the camera that is expressed on two independent DVI based digital video, power and control interfaces. You could think of them both as viewfinders, one in a tube and one flat.

You can use one, or the other, or both at the same time.

The RED-EVF has one or two additional capabilites I can discuss later, and is without doubt the higher performance product, but either one of them would be fine for camera operation. Both show Surround View, Histograms, Focus Assist, Frame Guides and Camera menus / status.

As an example, if you were shooting underwater or on steadicam the RED-LCD would be the best choice.

However I have seen similar comments on another thread about what info the camera can squirt out of the HD-SDI/HDMI ports. Which I guess it what you really want to know about?

I seem to recall it was something to do about the advertising setup requirements. They kept going on about frame markers in video village which was confirmed as being available. I've no idea where that is??

Stuart wrote that the EVF uses a DVI based signal. Maybe reading too much into the word BASED, but the signal may not be compatable with other DVI equipment.
