Just a day or two after I received #2818 I got a call from the Swedish land artist Katarina Mark. Her cameraman had backed out of their deal and she urgently needed someone to come and film the opening of her hedge maze (out door garden labyrinth). I hadn't had time to get a custom with the new gear yet but none the less agreed to come. My cousin, friend and fellow filmmaker Axel Petersén showed up with a Canon XH-A1 to act as a back up camera. I realised two things after the shooting:
RED SPACE clips way too early with the result of leaving footage underexposed and noisy. From then on I expose just before it clips in RAW and with great results. (In the finished documentation below you will find none of the underexposed clips, but some that regrettably were overexposed.)
The second thing I experienced was that contrary to my own testing and consulting with other redusers, REDCINE does a rellay good job of downscaling from 4K to SD. Also Compressor and Final Cut can down convert with satisfactory results, no aliasing. As long as one down converts to Pro Res. Directly down converting to for example SD uncompressed is not an option. First Pro Res in the resolution you're aiming for. From there on to what ever format one wishes. At least that is what I have found.
The following footage was intercut between RED ONE and Canon XH-A1 and it is not difficult to see which is which, even in the YOUTUBE so-called high res.
