This light was bought back in the spring of this year. I have really enjoyed this light, and while I want to hang on to it I need to sell it and use the money to invest in a light weight tripod system for my Red. (I’m also selling my O’Connor 50 which is listed here.)

I was thinking to buy some HMI light from this company. Was wondering if it will be a good choice?

thanks

l'm really sorry to bring this up, but when that model was being sold it was $699. The $1599 new model PRO 575 has a very robust ballast, a different igniter and is pretty great. I have 2 and I was looking for a used one since Richard is sold out for awhile. If you're interested in selling that light for closer to what it sold for originally, let's talk.

btw, your reel looks good. kudos

My mistake- I have adjusted the price accordingly. Thanks for the heads up.

will the ballast accept 240v

will the ballast accept 240v

Yes it will. (I have not used it as such, but from what I remember of the specs it is supposed to.)

I received a question regarding flickering with the ballast, and here is my response:

I have experienced no problems with this light at all. I would keep it, except that I need to put the money towards a light weight tripod for my Red. (I'll have to rent lights for the time being...)

I have used this light with the HVX/Letus, HPX, and the Red, and I have never had any flickering issues when the ballast was on either half or full power. If you take a look at my reel you can see the light in action. The shots specifically are around the following numbers:
0:31 - 0:34 (Casino scene - it is the key light)
0:50 - 0:54 (Interviews - again the key light)
0:55 - 1:02 (The tabletop shots - You guessed it- the key light)

These things hold their value pretty good, eh Ryan? Another happy Cool Lights ending. By the way just a couple of other facts here:

This particular ballast is 110v only. 575w only. The head won't work with our other 575w pro ballast without replacing the ignitor and the cable needs to be upgraded too if you wanted to use that more expensive ballast. It was part of our recent beta tests and was only one of about 4 different ballasts that are out there in the wild now. This is a fine ballast and someday will make part of a low cost, low weight, small 575w only system for par or fresnel as our development/production funds become available to put it into production. I hear this unit went to another of our happy customers who bought two of the 575w pro heads and 575/1200 ballast already so now he has three Cool Lights 575s.

We have built a nice little an rental inventory of Coollights... (what Richard, 30+ lights?). If you have been thinking about giving them a go, definitely do yourself a favor and check them out. You will not be disappointed. These are great lights… Not all of the Coollights are suited for all applications, but even with rental usage (read, getting beat up) they are holding up well for the most part. We ordered and keep spare parts and I’d still like to see some of the more frequently used moving parts get beefed up, more metal, etc. To that end we bought hard shell road cases for every light/ballast/head cable and they do the job keep them tidy and happy when out on the road.

Over their life cycle I have heard there have been some good suggestions made. Richard listens and when he agrees, the changes are implemented.

The Tungsten line of fixtures are nothing out of the ordinary just a good price (and as a nice surprise bulbs ship included)… but the 575 HMI and especially the CL-MF0150 CDM Fresnel are surprisingly nice. I say that because of the low entry-level price point… you worry that you get what you pay for. But the CL-MF0150s’ are banging little lights. We send them out almost 90% of the time with daylight bulbs and that’s what you get… nice bright, clean light with low heat, very little power draw (150w I think?) but with the same power as a 650w Fresnel. Actually seems even brighter to us. And those mini ballasts are genius.

Cold strike bulbs are tough to explain and control when out on rental and because misuse can shorten the bulb life we’re not sure we’re getting the best ROI we can, but new clients get a nice surprise. And $29 for a bulb is not too tough to swallow. We dropped six off at a commercial shoot last week and the DP fell in love with them. Said he’ll request them next time without question. And he dug the name!

For disclosure, I don’t work for Coollights and don’t get any discount (but didn’t stop me from asking). Since discovering the company we’ve been excited about having a good alternative with extraordinary customer service. I look forward to some new developments I hear rumor about!

Billy
