  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple's new hardware

Yep! Thats gonna be on the new iphone. Unbelievable stuff. The fact that it also runs OSX blows my mind even more so, possiblities are endless. One could program all sorts of interface devices that would mimick real world analogue controls. Imagine having all your electronic manual controls to the RED camera on one clean screen.. Simultaneously adjusting all controls through multitouch.

I can just imagine the electronic follow focus apps that one could code.. Exciting times indeed.

DJ's are also going to get a kick out of this. One could program all sorts of musical sequencing interfaces with this stuff.

This is going to be an incredible boon to developers. Wish I could code.

We'll see...

Apple has yet to release an iPod SDK of any type and plenty of us out here would love to code games and small apps for the iPod. It's rather frustrating, the only iPod games out there right now are recycled crap which Apple has either produced in-house or approached specific developers themselves to obtain them.

Seeing their move to OSX on handheld devices, Im guessing the native ipod OS will be dropped.

You could always install Linux on an ipod!

Yep. And it's been done... Quite a hacker movement already in place with games like pong, tetris and asteroids. But not commercially viable.

As for OSX [mobile] on the new iPhone and presumably future iPods, we can only hope that Xcode will include SDK elements and compiler tools for the new mobile devices. Just because it's "OS X" doesn't mean it's any easier to develop for. Apple still has to deliver the goods and I think they will be somewhat controlling of the iPhone. Especially due to any agreements with Cingular.

Forget pong and tetris, I've seen Doom2 on the ipod. I digress..

So the new Apple TV has an Intel processor. But they wont say what kind of processor it is. At $299, and a few hacks, these things could possibly be clustered in the 10's for a decent processing farm..

Actually scrap that. Bad idea.

Yep. Bad idea. I think the CPU is an ARM variant, probably one of the newer 800~1200 Mhz XScale embedded CPUs. It's not a Core Solo or Core Duo series x86 chip. The thing is just a bigger iPod on steroids that you can connect to your TV.

As for the whole Linux / Doom2 on iPod, yeah... It works. The 5G iPod has been hacked to run Linux and a special iPod / mobile port of Doom2. Kinda cool, but is a great way to totally futz your iPod.

Oh well I guess no HDD version cause they wanna to keep the form factor thin like a runway model on smack.

mmm, on second thought, with only 8gigs tops, this seems to violate the iPod "take all your music pics and videos with you" philosophy. look for a 60+ gig HDD version down the road. Maybe with a bigger screen sans phone?

My guess is that there will be a widescreen HDD version sometime in the next few months. They can't simply shuffle all iPod users who want the new widescreen display over to a 4GB / 8GB model while also forcing them to have integrated phone and expect it to fly. My guess is that such a new iPod wasn't announced because Apple wants all the media and consumer focus on Apple TV and iPhone and nothing else right now.

I'm intrigued by the iPhone and may consider switching, but that's doubtful. I'm with Verizon because it gives me the best coverage everywhere I go. Unfortunately, I travel into a lot of areas still that are dead to GSM and Cingular / AT&T with their "all over network" still has a long way to go to truly be "all over". It's slowly getting better and I'll definitely consider it when my current contract is up in another 23 months. As cool as the iPhone looks to be, I'm not about to pay $350 to buy my two lines out of the current contract and sign up for yet another contract. I'll just live with my current phone and buy a widescree/touchscreen iPod once they put an HDD or at least 24GB of storage into it.

One Red = 8 iPhones

One Red = 8 iPhones

Let see at 3.5 inches and 160 ppi that's 540 pixels verses 4520 for RED.

So you would need over 8 iPhones just to see one frame at full rez.

Oh well, maybe I can stream over iTV and see a decent image. ;)

Overall there wasn't much to Jobs keynote in terms of new products available now or even soon. Usually Jobs doesn't talk about products 6 months out so I am guessing he needed to have SOMETHING to announce or maybe the stock needed a bump.

The phone looks very nice but I am guessing it's not that close to finished. They badly need to deliver a widescreen video iPod. If the screen on the iPhone was ready now, they might have launched a new video iPod first. At 4 and 8 gig, the new phone can't hold that much video. No new iPod means the screen isn't ready yet, and hopefully Apple will get a new iPod out sooner than the phone delivery date.

Well we Mac world is always the consumer side. Wait for the NAB pre show keynote. That will blow your mind. And if you can make it to the keynote it usally free and worth going. I went to the one two years ago and it is almost worth the NAB trip it self.

Do you know offhand when it's scheduled this year?

it is usally the sunday before opening day. Just right before NAB start searching around the apple site.. Or sing up for the events news letter. Last year I didn't find the register link until about two days before. I singed up me and 4 friends. They put us on a waiting list and me and another friend got singed up and the others didn't make the cut. So as soon as it up I will post on here.. Last year they didn't have an event. But logic says this year they will be releasing at least an upgrade to the studio. So should be good times. Oh and free food and Champane after.

A Red 'preview' on Sunday for reservation holders would be fantastic. Monday/Tuesday are bedlam at the show and I imagine the Red area is going to get some interest.

8 gigs does not seem like much but what an incredible device ! this will make Apple and cingular a boat load of money. I am sure a high capacity I pod with the same form factor will ship before the June release of the phone. WOW !
