What are the BEST settings to use to achieve the HIGHEST QUALITY export files. For some reason I'm not feeling like my export files are coming out as good as they should be...

What SETTINGS are you using and why?

And what are you viewing the results on? Can you trust the monitor? How do the histograms look on the images?

Bob, I'm not using a Red Rocket Card. I'm using Redcine-X to export. Outputting to 1920 x 1080

Marc, I'm viewing the results on Dual 23" Apple Cinema Displays + 60" Samsung LED as a 3rd Monitor.

What are you feeling is lacking in your exports?

Are you exporting full res? 1/2 res? 1/4 res?
What are your other settings?
Are you sharpening before export?

Aaaaand the big one... How close are you sitting to the 60" monitor?

ericyoung, the image on the 60" looks DIGITAL - PIXELATED. Like I can actually see squares that make up the entire image.

Glen, yes exporting full res, file format: Quicktime - Debayer Settings: 2K Full, 3K Full, 4K Full - Output Resolution: 1920 x 1080 - NOT Sharpening before export - Aaaaand I'm sitting 8 - 10 feet from that little, tiny 60" (which I so wish was 70 or better) LOL.

What am I missing here. I totally can't figurer this thing out...

So it looks 'Blocky' on the Samsung LED; how does it look on the other monitors? Do they look the same? If not how are you driving the Samsung?

You say Quicktime, but what flavour? You have several choices from Proxy to 4444, the difference could be there.

Or it could be a lack of sharpening - RED doesn't 'Bake' any sharpening into the picture during capture like the other cameras do (name every video or cinema camera here), you need to add sharpening yourself during the post process. Either in REDCineX, your NLE, or desired CC software. Although you don't say the picture is soft, so that's probably not the problem.

Glen, when you say what "flavour", what exactly do you mean?

Yes, it looks VERY blocky on the Samsung LED. On the other monitors it's NOT a evident but its definitely there. The Samsung is connected via HDMI.

Personally I'm not a big fan of VERY sharp images but I'll see if sharpening changes anything... And NO the picture is NOT soft. On my RED Touch monitor it looks GREAT. I'm truly not understanding what the issue could possibly be.

Quicktime has many different levels of compression, and you need to choose which one REDCinex exports. 422 Proxy is the lowest quality / highest compression, 422 LT, 422 HQ. 422, and 4444. You have to choose which one you export from the Quicktime compression setting dialogue drop down.

Sounds like you've probably set it to Proxy.

Those are compression artifacts. Is that only showing on your 60" or everywhere you view it? We also need the codec and the containers. (.mov I'm assuming but what is inside the .mov?)

No, if I drag the window to the other 2 monitors it shows exactly the same...

Please tell us the exact Quicktime parameters that you are exporting. We can't help you improve your output if you don't tell us exactly what you are outputting right now.

Ok, please forgive me guys. For some reason it was exporting "MPEG Video" and that's what I was getting.

I changed it to ProRes 422 and the result is 1Million times better...

Another problem solved! Try ProRes 422 HQ.

BTW, what are your delivery specs? Who is going to be receiving these files? I would bet they have specific requirements for what they expect to receive -- for broadcast, for uploading to the web, or for Blu-ray disc.
