Hi Jim and the team,

This has probably been suggested before, what do you say, the RedOne shipping with a built-in GPS tracking device as a standard or even optional security feature?

I will surely want one on mine. Think about it, guys.

I think that idea has been suggested several times. It will most likely be an accessory...

I think the far cheaper and more convenient idea that was discussed in the past was that REDCINE would relay the camera's serial number to RED via internet every time footage was captured, that way if you notified RED that your camera was stolen the perp would be discovered and then blocked from using the camera....which makes the prospect of stealing the camera so much less attractive.

Yeah, but you can still use the camera without REDCINE.

"Open the dock bay doors RED".

I honestly don't see such automated tracking systems work. As others have indicated in the past it would be a bad idea to limit REDCINE to work only with an internet connection. I know companies that do not hook such systems directly to the internet. Internet can be down. Servers can be offline (on our end). You could be processing footage in a hotel room or on the road, etc. etc.

I plan to resolve this differently through insurance. If something gets stolen the insurance will pay for a new one. If you cannot be without a camera for long get another one or know where to rent one.

I don't think there is another plan in the world to help with any of that. Just look at the stolen car industry. Every time they introduce new anti-theft measurements the thiefs quickly adapt.

GPS recording will be interesting for other things though.

Agreed.

(Red#: spike... You have to rub it in?)

Turn the camera on and output SDI or HDMI perhaps.

I guess then we could use it to get to the location. RED RED, where's the location...;)
