  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thunderbolt RedMag reader

I don't think there would be any increase in speed since the current redmags should cap out at 260MB/s being Sata II. USB 3 is already doing 220MB/s.

BUT what would be nice is a new REDMag Thunderbolt 2 reader with two slots, daisy-chaining capabilities, and roughly the form factor of two REDStation Mini readers stacked on top of each other.

I'd use that on every shoot!

AS I Understand it does not make sense :) since even USB3 is faster then the SSDs inside - they max out at 180MB/s

You all just think about speed and nothing about people who don't have USB3 on their machines and other ways that thunderbolt makes it more flexible. A thunderbolt reader really needs to happen soon.

Even just add TB ports to the current readers, just for compatibility sake...So people can use TB, USB3, Esata, any of the fast ports on the market... But I think its cuz of Intels TB approval process and fees is why they didn't try this yet. That and the lack of real world speed gains

I would agree that TB support for me isn't really about any speed gain (perceived or real) - but rather it's about future compatibility. A two slot TB enabled REDMag reader is something I could have used over the weekend… and will be even higher on my list after November 15th - hint hint. Although I suppose that new machine will come with USB 3.

TB is bus-powered as well if implemented properly. Would love to have a dual-slot TB reader. Or give us an updated REDMAG mini reader that has both TB and USB3. It's about options and convenience!

What is the hinting for? Dragon cough cough?

One of the advantages of Thunderbolt is that you only need one type of cable for....everything. So a Thunderbolt REDmag reader (especially one with 2 slots) would still be very nice to have...

New MacPro apparently the delivery date will be around Nov 15th? Announcement next week...

Oh yea, totally forgot...I have Dragons on the mind...

How much slower (or is it) is the USB3.0 Mini Reader when its copying via bus-power? Conversely, would a esata to USB3 be faster/better (still bus-powered) than a esata to Thunderbolt adapter? I hate gack, but if it's massively cheaper, I'd deal with it just for some sweet 200mb/s offload speeds.

EDIT: Isn't USB an open standard compared to thunderbolt? As in, won't USB3 be more future compatible? Are there any affordable, bus-powered drives that read/write at ~200mb/s out there that are NOT SSD (aka affordable 1TB+ sizes)?

Me want Thunderbolt. C'mon RED, 6k is great and all, but unloading those fat mags without a Thunderbolt reader is going to be sloooooow.

I would like a thunderbolt reader as well. However not because the speed, but because it easy to connect, sometimes all my usb slots are used.

Realize though that thunderbolt will not make any difference in speed since the limiting factor is the SSD card which works around 200MB/sec.

Limited by the speed of the Mags.. which even with the new faster minimags USB3 still can keep up with assuming you have a clean bus.

Regardless.. as soon as Thunderbolt becomes less of a "political" nightmare to get along with we have no problem making a reader that supports it. You guys wouldn't believe the licensing fees and approval process compared to, well, pretty much everything. They gotta fix that.
