  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The "LED" light Group Buy

Love these lights.

Love these lights.

The way this technology utilizes LEDs is fundamentally different. Its about energizing the phosphors, not emitting photons in a restricted spectrum.

These are legit 1K output at 150w-ish consumption.

Since remote phosphor panels don't carry current, or heat up that much, they were able to use phosphors best suited to broad, even spectral response.

I've seen the future, and the future is remote phosphor lighting fixtures. Efficient, cool, high CRI - go from 3200, to 5600, to narrow band green for keying, by just sliding in a different thin lightweight durable panel - no second bulb set, no gels, no funky RGB mix to "simulate" white light.

The Area 48 Softs are compact, with impressive throw for a soft light, the barn doors control spill very well for a soft source instrument, can run off batteries, build quality appears very good but only time tells that story with authority.

I'm sure I sound like a shill, but if they are as durable as they look they deserve the praise because the performance is top shelf and the design of the fixture is very user friendly.

I've actually been working on a case design for an Area 48 based location kit to replace my ARRI Softbank IV kit that some low life helped themselves to a couple years back. I'll post pics on a fresh thread once I finalize the layout.

Cheers - #19

Sounds promissing! Will keep checking the thread alot!

Good to hear Mark,

trust me, both BB&S and the person in charge for Resellers are in the full understanding of how great this community is, and it's purchasing power, so they have been trying very hard to find a solution that will please every one here, yet without upsetting the now in place "re-Sellers" distribution chain, so I am confident that the solution that we'll be presented here will still be advantageous to the community.

Last time I couldn't buy as my light was sent to US and the reseller wanted me to send my Fed Ex number. Since I didn't have a Fed Ex number and the reseller couldn't tell me how much it will cost for him to send it through Fed Ex and charge me that amount, so it was a stuck. This time if the shipping is done from any country in europe and the payment is through paypal plus they can ship it to me, then I am in. I will be sad if this time the deal is not as good as last time, as I didn't get the light when it was not my fault. Anyway. Will wait to hear about the deal.

Well, I truly hope that this time we can make sure you will be served as well Sabyasachi, and if there is any issues, be sure to contact me directly and I'll make sure I'll do anything in my capacity to make things happen for you, as I truly believe this lights can bring added value to anyone's work!!

Or, you could have just gotten a FedEx number.

I can understand that. What happens to some companies is that when we ship out merchandise with our own Fedex account numbers we actually get stuck and end up paying the taxes/import fees. I know that doesn't make sense, but believe me it has happened to us like a hundred times already. So the simple thing is for us not to use our Fedex number and ask the customer to provide their account number and that way everybody is happy. I have spoken to Fedex about this many times and they really don't seem to care one bit. But why would they, its not their money!

Brandon & Jason,
When I buy from B&H there is never a problem. The shipping amount is paid before hand while check out. Fed Ex then does the customs and collects the amount plus a small fee for their services and deliver at my door. I am not sure how the sender will be asked to pay customs. It is always the importer who has to pay the taxes and collect the goods. Exporter has nothing to do with it.

It is a very tedious process to get a Fed Ex number here. Fed Ex India even suggested me to ask the dealer to pre charge the shipping amount and send it. You guys just won't understand how much of a pain it is for us in India to import things. That is why my most preferred dealer is B&H. I am very very happy with them. Can't praise them enough.
Cheers,

While I'm flattered that anyone would compare us to an organization that is as large as B&H, the reality is we're not B&H, and they must have some special agreements worked out with Fedex and the customs/taxes procedure. As I said, I have spoken to Fedex numerous times about this kind of thing, and its always the same outcome. As my Fedex receipts show, we've ended up having to pay the customs fees many many times for our customers.

Jason,
B&H doesn't have any agreement with Customs. It doesn't need to. When you check out, there is a standard statement displayed "I understand that B&H is not responsible for any duties, taxes, VAT and other related fees which may be charged upon delivery.
And then you have to press the OK button before proceeding to place the order. The good thing about Fed Ex or DGL is that they deliver the item at your doorstep and collect the customs duty from you plus their service charge. If you use Government postal service to send items, then you have to physically go to the customs to get the items cleared. That also takes a longer time, at times even 7 days or so.

I also bought from Wood** Camera some Arri style dovetails, bridge plate and clamp etc and they have a standard check out procedure through Fed Ex which includes only shipping cost. Fed Ex then delivered the items to me and collected the customs.

You also find similar checkout procedures in MYT works. I guess the other two suppliers are smaller businesses when compared with B&H.
Cheers,
Sabyasachi
PS: Sorry for shifting this discussion away from the BBS light to retailer best practices. Look forward to hearing about the next group buy.

Any updates. Im just getting this bad feeling that the info is in a new thread. Its been so quiet.
