  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

39-inch Seiki 4K UHDTV Review

Might pick two of these up for the new mac pro for the price of one cinema display.

One thing I think I should point out is it doesnt do 120Hz like the 50 inch one its limited to 60Hz at lower resolutions but if your just using it at 4k and don't game that shouldn't be an issue but I just wanted to mention that the review had some incorrect information.

Pixels aside, these monitors still fall way short for multipurpose desktop displays. The refresh rate is too low to properly display 50/60Hz content for starters, without dropping to lower resolutions and subjecting yourself to poor onboard scaling algorithms. It's not just gamers who like high refresh rates, lots of other apps benefit as well.

I'm interested to know if the 39" has the same sync and judder issues we have on the 50" model...? Can't seem to get a straight answer and don't really want to buy one to find out.

There was very little jutter on my 50 inch. I didn't really see any jutter on the 39 inch but I haven't used it all that heavily yet. I am bringing it to work tomorrow and will be using it for 8+ hours so I can probably let you know tomorrow. Also on my 50 inch I only get it a little bit on the left side with only certain colors (kind of like being able to see the low-ish Hz on CRT) and its not over the entire screen.

I am guessing it has to do with the backlight frequency so it may be hit or miss as I think some 50 inch displays have it worse than others.

Unlike the 50", I'm also fairly sure this display is an 8 bit panel instead of a 10 bit panel. This is because several of the websites listing specifications of both tvs have them labeled this way.

Eyes also. :)

Jeff is right, refresh on these over HDMI (30hz) is too low to be viable as PC monitor replacements. Asus has a 31" 4k monitor that does 60hz over DisplayPort - unfortunately it will set you back $3500, and the drivers are still catching up (not to mention GPU horse-power if you plan to do any gaming at full res).

I am having some sync issues on the 39 inch but running it off a gtx 460 on linux using kind of a work-around to get it working at all. When driving it off my gtx 670 I saw no sync issues/dropouts.

I haven't noticed any judder so far. Can you give me a link of a page or a screenshot where you get a lot of judder so I can compare apples to apples?

The Asus is a re-badged Sharp PN-K321, but sells for $1000 less. It's an OK monitor, but has some issues -- namely some sync problems as it uses the dual-channel mode of DisplayPort 1.2 or dual HDMI inputs to drive the display at 60Hz and the computer sees it as two separate displays. This is also a problem when trying to minimize and maximize apps or stretch stuff across the entire display as it behaves like two separate 1920x2160 screens. Meh... ATI drivers actually have a mode for most of their video cards to assist with this, nVidia said they are working on it, but it's been over 3 months now and nothing has materialized that I'm aware of.

I briefly owned the Sharp PN-K321, but returned it. I just didn't feel like it was a proper way to spend $4800 at the time. The QC on the monitors was rather poor -- lots of light leakage across the bottom of the screen and the split-screen issues are just a hassle.

I think when we see HDMI 2.0 and better bonded-stream support for DP 1.2 in these 4K+ monitors, then they will be truly worth looking into. As much as i want the extra pixels now, there are too many other compromises. Doesn't matter who makes the display. The 39" SEIKI looks like an OK option for a large secondary display where the refresh rate going over 30Hz isn't a big deal. I used the 50" SEIKI for this for a while and it served alright. But in the end, I had to demote the display to a lesser purpose. I'm using the 50" SONY 4K now and it's superior in every way. It's also 4X the price... And yet it still tops out at 30Hz refresh at full rez.

Er... Anything and everything shown at 3840x2160 @ 24fps. Finally got someone at Seiki to acknowledge that it's a known issue that they're working on, similar to the sync issues. Known, but who knows when or if there will be a fix.

Doesn't matter what source, be it 4K from an upscaling OPPO 103, the REDRAY, running connected to a GTX680 or GTX Titan in different workstations, etc.. Same judder. No judder at HD resolutions or even at 4K when shown at 30fps. But 4K @24fps is judder-city. Not just my display, seen it on every single SEIKI I've tested. Most people claim they don't see it, but I guess I'm more sensitive that way. I'm glad I finally got confirmation that they're acknowledging it. Look back through the 50" SEIKI thread, a couple others who own the panel concur with me. It's really not that bad overall, but once you see it, you always see it. It's like the cadence is just off somewhere, like when at full rez when showing 24Hz, something is just off on their cycle timing of the panel.

Installed the latest firmware all seems well so far. VLC 2.1 really brings my UHD Seiki 4k where I want!

Anyone tested the 50inch at 25Hz/fps ?
If someone with one of these could, it would be great to know how it performs, in particular regarding the judder issue.
It seems hard to find one in Europe, I am interested in ordering one, but I need to know how it performs at 25fps. I would like to use one as a client monitor, but judder is not acceptable, some clients arr DPs and they will notice.

Cheers,
Damien

The 50" has been nice for stills work (REALLY nice actually), but I'll wait for HDMI 2.0 before buying one for generic PC monitor or video duty.

Has the 24p playback stumble been fixed on this?

Just got word that it has not been fixed. As with the 50" SEIKI, and the Skyworth and other displays using the same panels, it seems to be a hardware issue and firmware may not be able to overcome this.
