Paralinx Arrow caused HDMI-Board crash in Epic - had to send it "home" for repair

Dear forum members,

for a shoot we used a Paralinx Arrow.

Worked fine for an hour - than it stopped working with no signal from the camera.

We had to send the cam to RED and the board for HDMI had to be replaced. !!!!!!

What are your experiences with the P. Arrow? Anybody had a case like this - Paralinx crashing HDMI-Board ...is it safer to use a Teradek Bolt with SDI?

Sure I want to safe some money, buying a Paralinx Arrow, but if need a new board now and then,
its even "cheaper" to go for a Bolt.

Thanks for your input!

Christian

we had almost same problem with one of the Epics but we didnt sure it was caused by Paralinx.few months passed HDMI still not working on Epic.we use Paralinx on other body and its %100 fine.

The teradek uses the same chipset as the arrow, though it is much easier to damage or short-out an hdmi port than an hd-sdi port. Usually running incorrect power or using a damaged hdmi cable is responsible for this sort of incident. I've had AC's fry the arrow but not the hdmi port, though i have had an hdmi break off in the camera port, once.

Hmm. Worrying as we've been using the Paralinx Arrow recently. Did RED say that the board was fried by the Arrow? I mean, you'd think an HDMI output would be pretty much just an output, and it shouldn't be getting fried unless there's a short or something in whatever's being output to.

I know Dan from Parralinx is on reduser, i'm sure he'll chime in

I would definitely like to address this, as I believe it is a problem related to HDMI implementation on the epic, or perhaps to a short in the cables someone may be using.

I'm an epic shooter myself, and also the founder of Paralinx. Every time I shoot, I use the Arrow on my HDMI port with my Epic, and also with many other Epics.

I have never experienced this problem myself on my Epic, or anyone I know personally and am close to who is using the system. It may be possible the shielding on your cable may have been broken and caused some sort of short, which in turn did something to your epic HDMI port.

I would ask you, does the Arrow still work with another HDMI source?

We also have never had any complaint of the Arrow damaging the HDMI on any other camera.

Believe me, we feel for you as we are camera people ourselves and nothing is more painful than gear going down during a shoot.

For those who would prefer to use an HD-SDI port - we have the Paralinx Crossbow HD-SDI input module. This provides SDI input, physical protection and mounting for the arrow, and simple power for the Arrow.

Another thing to be aware of - as I have seen people do it and it always makes me want to cry.

People plugging the Arrow directly into the back of the HDMI port on the camera, without using our SHIELD protective mounting bracket:

having the Arrow sticking out of the back of the Epic is WITHOUT QUESTION a BAD IDEA. Not saying anyone here did that, but I have seen it done, and it is a surefire way to break something.

Anyway, hoping your issue is resolved soon and without hassle. No one has contacted Support@paralinx.net about it - which is where you should be emailing us if you think it was definitely something caused by our product.

Thanks for your time, and be well.

i didnt contacted because thought its related with camera. However Paralinx still works fine on 2nd Epic and didnt cause anything like this.
Thats why we didnt blame paralinx on first hand. Also ordered paralinx crossbow for other camera so it can work via SDI.

Had the exact same problem after using the paralinx without issue for 3 months. One day the port simply stopped working. Bought a cheapo amazon sdi-hdmi converter and was able to keep using the paralinx on the epic. Didn't really think the trouble was related to the paralinx, as it wept working well. But after listening to similar reports, I don't know.

Cristian, did Red tell you it was a problem with the paralinx that caused it? Did they charge you for replacing the hdmi board?

Hello!

Thank you for your answers!

...my conclusion is to use SDI-Port of my camera.

@Jake: Power was D-Tap from a V-Mount (Rouge 140)

@Pedro: Yes, they charged me - this was the money I had to invest on a wireless transmitter.

Also using Arrow all the time with no problems. But starting to worry a bit... Does anyone know what potentially can cause it? Is it bad cabling? HDMI never will be a good connector interface. I change cables sooo many times and bring at least 3 spare ones to every shoot.

By the way, anyone noticed when in playback mode and HDMI device either turned off or cable plugged in/out, the playback mode on Epic goes to live view mode by itself?

I don't think the Arrow is the culprit on this. I had an HDSDI on my old (now upgraded to an Epic) Scarlet stop working. At the time I also owned a Terdek Bolt, and was using it out of that port. Do I think the Bolt caused the HDSDI to stop working? I don't think so. I think that the video out on these cameras (SDI or HDMI) are somewhat fragile, from my own experience and from the number of reports.
I am a very happy user of the Arrow, and it works perfectly, both on my Scarlet and on my Epic.

My Scarlet's HDMI also stopped working recently while plugged into a new HDMI monitor that was tested working the day before... And a similar thing happened to my SDI port a few months ago so it now doesnt work with any monitors but works with one SDI device. Why are these ports so flimsy/sensitive?

My HDSDI issue on my Scarlet wasn't with all monitors. My small HD worked but not my panasonic 17". But when I sent the brain in for the Epic upgrade they surely detected the problem. The camera was a couple of months out of warranty and I had to pay about 700 bucks to get that fixed...

I just tried to use my camera on a Movi, and the HDMI port wouldn't work. Last time it worked was with a Paralinx Arrow. Haven't tried it since that shoot two months ago. How much is the repair? I need my HDMI.

Ugg.

Updated to latest firmware and it did not fix it. Any news on this issue?
