When I try to setup a WS format footage project in FCPX i can never get rid of some sort of black bars. What settings are you guys using for WS footage?

If you put WS material into a 1080p project, it's naturally going to have a matte or black bars. Change the project settings to match the aspect ratio of your material. I haven't used FCPX recently so I'm not sure where that setting ended up in the interface. It's probably a secret hidden hotkey shortcut you can only access through your apple account on iTunes in iOS7.

i remember searching through a few sub menus to find the setting.

IIRC, it's done when you set up the project. You can choose among many pre-set resolutions or have it configure to the first clip you bring in. I haven't worked with WS projects yet so I don't know if it will accommodate an "odd" aspect ratio. You may end up pillar boxing or letter boxing to accommodate unusual WS size.

You can change the aspect ratio in one of the sequence or project sub-menu, but not after the project is opened or while loaded. There are a number of online tutorials about the FCPX interface, that note the hotkey shortcuts as well as the do's and don't and exceptions or work arounds.
